Correct, it's just a plastic squatter. It's obviously portable, as most of them would be porcelain like real toilets.

I think it's just kind of a sheld in case you piss forward. Really don't know actually.
Don't worry, there are decent toilets in Korea. Actually I'd rather use a toilet in a Korean public washroom than a Canadian one, provided I have my own supply of toilet paper.

One other reason for the hood is to help when flushing. When a squatter is flushed (obviously not the one above however) a jet of water from the rear pushes everything down the drain in the front. The hood prevents all that from splashing out the front.

These toilets with one way glass are really nice. Seem to be very common in the Netherlands.
I remember it was a crazy feeling taking a crap in the middle of Venlo's biggest shopping strip while all the peoples were walking around me.
