The building opened in 1910 as a seven-story structure named the Gates Building after J.C. Gates, a local shoe manufacturer and philanthropist. In its early years, a pool hall operated in the basement, according to a historic inventory prepared by the City Landmarks Commission. Ten floors were added in 1930. Over the years it also was known as the Dierks Building and the Home Savings Association building.

Saw maybe another 20 feet of the basement during the 2nd trip. Also got a real close look at the alarm - it's rigged up to some kind of cordless-phone thing. Flashing like crazy as ususal.
