Hah, probably demolished is right. Apparently pieces of the columns can be found in the gardens of the Guild Inn.

At least the new City Hall ended up being a fairly tasteful building.

Apparently people HATED the new city hall when it was built though.

Wasn't the Old City Hall also being threatened with demolition until many years after the new one was complete?

Like Hamilton's old city hall? Just think, Toronto could have followed in Hamilton's footsteps and the Eaton Centre could be where old city hall is. *sheds a tear*

Heh, yah. And Toronto's new city hall could eventually move to the Eaton Centre while the old one sits around empty, while idiots at City Hall decide whether to throw marble or limestone on it. Toronto is so lucky to not have as dysfunctional a city council as Hamilton does. It's truly pathetic.

Council wanted to build a much less inspiring building which was actually built by Imperial Oil (the building is in the DB]), but university architecture students started a movement for an international competition. The result was this very tasteful modernist icon, one of several in the city. The bizarre mentality at the time of the Eaton Centre proposal was that height=bad, and some councillors suggested a compromise deal with Eaton's to sacrifice Old City Hall in exchange for shorter towers. But remember that in those days, the building wasn't in the restored condition you see today, and given the wave of liberalizing, it was seen by many in those days as a pretentious eye sore.

Stewie: Old City Hall was threatened by demolition to make way for the original Eaton Centre plan.
