wasn't there something like 8 tons of sand on the other side of the emergency escape hatches? Or was that just an Atlas silo feature?

Minuteman III sites also have the sand feature. I talked to a missile crew guy a while ago and he said the funny thing about the sand is, the sand has more volume then the capsule can contain...

The Titan I's had a sand-filled escape hatch. From what I heard, the ceiling hatch was remotely opened, allowing the sand to pile at the bottom, which would allow the crew to climb the pile of sand to reach the ladder. Seems like that would have to be a huge load of sand, or maybe it was done with another ladder.

This hatch has 2 indicator switches to show that it's open.
