If I remember right, it's something related to Islam... they showed it on the news a lot when the army invaded Baghdad because a lot of precautions were taken to not damage it.

One hopes it's not a holy site or a mosque! If it is, you can understand why the forces there are so disliked, as this site is currently being used as an army base. It looks more like a memorial, anyway.

If there are troops there there there for its portection nothing more. Trust me no soldier was allow to walk into a mosque unless you saw people with guns running in.

Definitely not a mosque -- it's a memorial, as I recall. Still, you can imagine our unease if there were foreign soldiers crawling all over monuments in DC, even if they were supposedly there for our well-being...

stop being so distrusting, if they were not there to protect it why is it still standing as we are looking at pictures of bombed out buildings ?

Well.. If this building is in any way sacred to the people here it's kind of unlikely they would bomb it, hey ?

you would be suprised. Come to think of it if they bombed it they could make the US look bad. That would be a good enough reason for a terrorist.

Mark, could you tell me in what neighbourhood this was? I might have sattelite data of this (I have sattelite data of about whole baghdad, from before and during the war, now no longer available on the internet)
Also, were you ever in Zawra Park (the park where the main parades were held)? Is there indeed a little park railroad there?

That is the "Teardrop" memorial. Supposed to be one of Allah's tears that separated in half over Baghdad and formed the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Our third platoon element was stationed there our first few months in country.

This is the Al-Shaheed Monument which first opened in 1983. It is also known as the Martyr's Memorial.
