10 limestone piers support the graceful two-level green balcony. Limestone would have been from one of numerous local pits that operated in the area in the 1800's.

The restoration they've done thus far is quite amazing. The building was in a very sorry state before work started...and there was talk of rippin' it down at one point. Good to see a consortium put some money into the old girl. Last I heard they ran outta money again.

I certainly hope they don't tear it down. I remember how impressed I was when I first saw it, about 50 years ago. It was the closest in appearance to some of the large hotels in Scarborough, Yorkshire. It was also one of the tallest building in the area.
