My guess; a kitchen attached to the gatehouse. The tubs are too high to be urinals, and the doors are too small for it to be a horse-trough (tho the Germans might have changed that). 5/28/15: I read a book that described English tenements. It said that the really old ones had troughs for emptying chamber pots.
