This is a fire extinguishing agent. You're supposed to dump the grains over the source of the fire! I doubt it's very toxic, it's still very common!

that looks like casting sand used in making phaucet molds (this old house taught that one)

It IS a fire extinguishing agent, Spek. I know, I was curious, so I GOOGLED what I found on the barels. It is made to extinguish burning metal fires! There are several colors and at least hald of a dozen types of solid fire extinguishing agent. Sorry if its color crossed you!
