I was a grad student at Berkeley when they shut the bevalac/bevatron down. We had to dismantle one of the experiments there and we had free run over the entire place. The pictures on this web site are good, but wow the stuff that you missed.

Inside the ring is pretty trippy. Because of the circular design, it is very easy to get disoriented and not be able to find the way you came in. There used to be giant diffusion pumps, like 20' tall inside, to maintain the vacuum. Lots and lots of equipment and stuff. Also very interesting was the remains of the medical facility. A beam came out of the storage ring into an operating theatre. The operating table was still there, including the mounting device for positioning the patient's head. The patient's head would be put inside of a plastic full head mask, with just eye holes and mouth holes. It looks like a horror movie prop. There used to be some masks still in the operating room, but they were eventually taken by souvenir hunters. The main computer console for the operating room was a huge mess of cables. I wish I had some pictures, but I didn't think of it at the time...

Cool! I've seen the masks (they had one in bldg. 64). I hope I'll get out there sometime soon - I'll have to get a permit or something to get inside the igloo.
