In the cabinet, I can see the backside of a 3420 IBM reel tape sitting on its edge. The yellow thing in the middle was what we would put on if we wanted to write to the tape. (write protect ring) and the ring around the edge had to be removed by hand. There was another type of ring around the edge that was left on and the tape drive would automatically open it and use vacuum to draw the tape into the drive to self load it. Wonderful machine but can be a real bitch when the tape jammed. The racks in the foreground made an interesting sound when dropped. (kinda musical if dropped right).

That sounds like the 3480's cartridge drives. Definite improvement in terms of storage, durability and portability. But an even bigger bitch when jammed in the drive.

The multiloader drives were called 'A.C.L.s" or Automatic Cartridge Loaders. Great for writing to backup but a pain in the ass when using single tapes for regular read jobs. Pretty much phased out with the 3490s (more capacity) and then the 3590s which had tons more storage. The 3590s were loaded permanently into the automated libraries and connected via fibre to other locations. Spelled 'The End' to the manual tape library and a lot of us became unemployed.
