cant turn it into lofts, once a church, always a church, you have to demo it the (at least roman catholic) church wont allow religious buildings to be used for anything else

I beg to differ... i can name about 5 Catholic churches just in this town that have been converted into apartments and our 1 family houses. Also, I know of an episcopal church that was renovated for use by a local historical society.

Churches can be deconsicrated. Many people believe that God is not confined to a building. If a church is no longer serving its purpose, then it is time to remove it.

Not necessary. A building no longer serving its purpose can be converted, potentially saving culture heritage and the environmental costs of demolishing buildings.
