Is that a small place or part of a tunnel system?

Just sewage, hot water, or whatever tubes. None of us were going to climb down the ladder. Above you can see the paved sections that the pipes go under. There were a couple of other grated areas with pipe underneath as well. Considering the amount of bathrooms and bath's in this place the pipe system is probably pretty massive underneath the facility. This is just a peek.

This is almost certainly steam distribution for heating buildings and water. It could also be extremely hot water or glycol distribution for the same purposes, but it shouldn't be just plain old residential hot water due to the location and the size of that insulation. Look at some steam tunnel pictures sometime and you'll see what I mean.

I don't care what you guys say, next time we go here, I'm going in this damn tunnel system. I'll have my Ka-Bar unsheathed to avoid being attacked by racoons like Peter Griffin. These pictures are just too damn tempting.

MacGyver is correct. . . high temp water system was used for heating buildings. The facility had 'the latest and greatest' technology for 1968.. .
