The lower section of ladder was tied to the rest of it by pieces of wire, seen on the highest visible rung. After giving the ladder a few tugs, we decided it would be a bad idea to climb up. Looking up it, we could see the black night sky overhead, indicating this to be an alternate entrance to the complex (at least for anyone foolhardy enough to brave the ladder).
