Arsonist

Tuesday was a national holiday so I brought my wife out to see the destroyed neighbourhood. There were workers on site (though not working hard) so we stuck to civilian paths. My wife wanted to go up a set of stairs leading up a pile of rubble. I agreed but there was a man standing in view of where we'd have to go and I figured he was a worker. I took her up another way to wait for the right time.

But when we went back down, that guy was still standing there. We gave up and headed back down. Then I noticed the guy had lit a fire on the steps of the smashed out doorway. I muttered "What the hell is he doing?" and he came over to us. He was obviously drunk, covered in sweat, and surprisingly spoke English. The conversation went as follows:

HIM: Where are you from?
ME: Uh, Canada.
HIM: How long have you been in Korea?
ME: A few years.
HIM: Can you speak Korean?
ME: Only a little bit. (looking over his shoulder) Uh, should we do something about that fire?
HIM: Is this your wife?
ME: Yes. Anyway, nice meeting you. We have to go have supper.
HIM: Nice meeting you.
ME: (whispering) Okay, let's get out of here.

We decided to tell the construction workers about the fire. It didn't look dangerous and they were probably going to raze the area anyway, but it just seemed responsible. Plus it meant we could walk on the lot and see their reaction, but not get in trouble because we were helping them. They hardly took notice of us until Jung talked to them.

She said we found a pile of garbage on fire and explained where. The construction worker seemed to understand and told one of the others something like "There's another fire. Go put it out."

Talking about it after, I think the guy knew he was caught and wanted to play innocent and be friendly so we wouldn't report him.
