Can it still be done?

Yes, apparently it still can. I have to admit, I did not think it could. The building has finally been purchased by a local investor. Security had been beefed up. 24 hour guard, new metal halide parking lot and backside lights (really bright ones,) secured gates and fences, and did I mention a 24 hour guard? No way. Or is there? After some unsuccessful attempts to squeeze under a fence elsewhere (I'll get back to that building,) we decided to go on home, taking a last look at Sears on the way. As noted earlier that night, there was no security guard in sight. We thought maybe he'd taken off in favor of a late night bootie call, but whatever the reason, he did not appear to be there. So...we drove around once again to assure ourselves that we weren't missing a vehicle in the shadows and parked nearby. Before we knew it, we were in the parking garage after finding a way onto the lot. I know there's a tunnel there somewhere, but we couldn't find any indication of where, so no luck. We turned our attentions toward the main building. Once inside, we pause briefly to survey the audible noises around us. Just water dripping. Sweet. To top off getting in with little chance of encountering anyone else, the lights outside made headlamps unnecessary much of the time. Snapped some great pics with my cheapo digital and headed toward the stairs. Oh yeah...the security guard? Camped out in his van inside the fence on the opposite site of the building, asleep or some such thing. After summitting and signing the log (alas, there is little space left for future explorers...I suggest a new log, maybe?) we headed back down. My friend had to go to class in the morning, so no extensive touring. On the way out, we check the window for the "security" guy, and he's nowhere to be found. Shit. Checking out the other side of the building, we notice that he's awake and crusing around. Shit. Thankfully, he left long enough for us to squeeze out and be able to say we did it. I hope it's not the last time. We could all use more Sears.
