College Tunnels
As most people visiting this site know, College and University tunnels are service tunnels carrying cables, steam pipes, telephone and communication lines. They are mostly square or rectangular in cross shape, and are normally high enough to walk in. Most carry steam pipes, and tunnelers who explore them often warn about the dangers of scalding steam.
There are also warnings about asbestos, not a danger to be taken lightly. Some universities won't allow staff into tunnels without respirators, while in others this is not a problem.
The attraction of university and college tunnels seems to be going some place few others go, exploring things other people just don't see and occasionally, taking a look at huge and almost ancient machinery. It's all in the spirit of adventure. It's a thrill, close by, often easy to access and fun and frightening at the same time.
I have explored college tunnels in Australia and the US.
