| | Rubber boots or old shoes? < on 6/25/2010 1:36 AM >
| | | As you guessed it, i'm asking whether people prefer a pair of rubber boots when draining, or just a pair of old shoes they don't mind getting wet. I want to start draining, but i don't know if i should go out and buy the tallest pair of boots i can find (short of being hip-waders) or if i should just use old shoes (unless there's problems that arise from this).

| | | I just wear regular shoes- unless the water is very deep and it's cold outside, in which case i wear waders. The one time I wore rainboots, they filled up with water and I couldn't get them off for a few hours.

| | | Defiantly old shoes you don't mind getting wet, waders should be saved for deep water, and rain boots shouldn't really be worn.

| | | Last time I went draining, I told my friends that regular shoes would be fine. Then we got about 50 meters in and it was ankle deep water with no dry way past. I don't see why old shoes would at all be preferable to rubber boots, provided you don't get them flooded (which has happened twice to me already).

Definitely not in sewers/combined drains, unless you want to be squishing around in some rather unpleasant substances. Waders all the way
when you are here, you wish you were there. but once you're there, it soon becomes a here, and you again wish to be there instead of here... we will never be completely satisfied. |

I'm fine if the water is ankle to knee deep (i can roll up my pants) but if it's any higher, i'll want waders.

This. I wore shoes in a combined drain because boots would have clashed with my kilt and it was a little gross.

| | | I don't know what's in your area, but a lot of times you can go to a local farm supply store or look in the work shoe section at walmart for some good boots for cheap. I use steel-toe, slip resistant, rubber boots I got at walmart for $20. They've lasted a year with no trouble. The steel isn't heavy, and I don't have to worry about them reeking later or having to wait for them to dry.

| | | The only problem with waders (and reason I have never bothered with them) is that they look rather out of place outside the drain, if your approach to it involves anything more than driving up to the outfall/manhole and getting in.

| | | Unless you're fighting the fresh it's drain shoes all the way. (Drain shoes = runners/sneakers/whatevers permanently delegated to drain duty)

| | | Waders for me but that's because I do sewers too and I'll be damned if I get S*** in my socks for no good reason. I'm in Canada and a lot of drains are easier to access when there's frozen water to slide in on, I find I can wear thermal underwear and it keeps me much warmer than shoes would; winter boots would also be too heavy/warm/gross when wet in that case.

| | | Since all of my sneakers are made of canvas and I love my Doc Martens far too much to cover them in tons of muck, I prefer rain boots. My mom got me a pair for Christmas. They're cheap, easy to find, look okay whether you're inside of a drain or out, and you can get ones that suit your personal style. Mine are red argyle.
