| | | Posted by Byberrian Fanman So.. what is your price range, exactly? To add: Every single body you have described is a baaaad idea. The lens is an even shittier idea, as not only does it fucking SUCK, it will not even work with the 10D, D60 or D30 as these bodies will only accept full-frame EF lenses, NOT EF-S. These ancient bodies were based on film bodies with full-size mirrors which will strike the protruding rear of an EF-S lens.
| It's kinda like buying a car (buying a camera). You could buy a brand new car (60D, XS, etc), or a 1990's or 1980's model still in decent shape that will get you around just fine (30D, XTi). But for good to ok quality there's a line where you don't want to go too far back and cross, let's say buying a 1960's car for a daily driver (D30, D60 which came out waaaaay back in 2000 and 2002 resp). Another choice to consider is one of the (more modern) higher-end point and shoots with DSLR features (say, a Canon SX10 or 20, G-series, or even an older S5 or S3). They're decent alternatives, but more importantly you may be able to find a used one within your budget and still get good results. That is, unless you really need the interchangeable lens capability or cleaner high ISOs a DSLR can offer (among other things). In that case, an XTi or better would be a wiser choice. Even though it's a kit lens, the 18-55 **with IS** is better optically than the one *without* IS that you were looking at.

| I think that's fairly good advise I had an SX-10is before my XSI and it was a good little camera. Couldn't keep up with a low end DSLR at very high ISO's or for really long exposure (well it only did 15 sec. w/out CHDK) but the reach of the lens and macro capability where awesome. In good light or with a tripod for UE it produced very usable images. If your on a budget it is pretty hard to beat as you could probably pick one up for $250+/- I would rather shoot with an SX10 than a D30/D60 for sure. Just some food for thought. If you get a high end point and shoot it'll probably get you hooked enough that you'll take the P&S to its limits and then start saving for a better DSLR.

| | | I want to purchase my first(real) camera. I currently have a Canon powershot (I think its an IS100SX if I'm not mistaken). Now this camera is very nice for shooting family party pictures, and the 10x zoom isn't bad... However, I don't even bring it with me as I explore, its unable to take good pics in a dark environment. it only has a maximum of 15 seconds exposition time... as soon as you put more than a few hundreds ISO the picture becomes too noisy, etc. Now, I am NOT looking for a professional camera. As much as I'd love to have a 3500$ pro camera, I just don't have that budget. I was looking for a Canon Rebel XS, and figured it might just be enough for me. However, I noticed it can't shoot videos. Now shooting videos is not my main goal, but having the ability to would be nice. I then settled on the Canon Rebel T1i... It can shoot 720p vids at 30fps, or 1080p vids at 20 fps (might be cool for very slow moving videos, but anything moving fast at 20 fps will appear laggy). Its picture taking ability seems to be a bit better than the XS too. The price is really my limit though. I will not go higher than this, and I already feel it would be too much, although I would accept piercing a big hole in my wallet for that camera. So I'd like your opinions on that camera. I'm kinda sold to Canon, but if you suggest me something else and really back your suggestion with something (like big deference in price, or big deference in quality or ability for the same price), I might consider going for another brand. I know its probably not a simple question, but just do your best to answer, and don't be too technical, as I have some basics, but I'm not a pro! I know what ISO is, I understand the basic of aperture, and exposition, I am able to shoot in manual mode (in fact I hate auto modes), but still, try not to be too technical. Thanks a lot!
