| | | I was at a get together yesterday with Shutterbug. One thing we knew going in was that we were the only couple who don't have children. Fine, figured since these people had known us for years this would not be an issue. Well, for two of the other folks, I was wrong. These folks were the parents of the host and I knew them for years so that was why they were there and that is why I kept my civility although I was ready to freak out on them. There was one other friend who I hadn't seen since early summer so he and I were chatting mostly about work and other non-child stuff. He and his girlfriend had a baby girl this year so it's understandable why they were kept pretty busy. During our conversation, the host's mother butted in and said "Hey, the guy wants pictures of his daughter. He's not interested in what you have to say." "Oh." I replied and turned to the guy and said "Sorry for keeping you from your pictures." The guy had a shocked look on his face and told me that he was getting pictures while we were talking and was enjoying our conversation. The host's mother then said "I don't want to butt in but really, he has more important things to talk about." I went quiet at that point as I had to bite back a very vulgar response to her. The guy I was chatting with was embarrassed as well and stepped out of the room. Then, as I was trying to cool off, the mother's boyfriend then started asking why Shutterbug and I don't have kids of our own. I told him we don't have the time. He kept badgering me and I finally excused myself to use the washroom. Later, I was still feeling pretty pissed off and had one hell of a time keeping civil with these two folks. They finally left (they weren't staying for dinner) and that was pretty much it for the night. Even though I had cooled off, I felt like an outsider even though I was with family and long time friends. At this point, I don't know if I really want to accept any more invitations with these people as I'm worried that this is going to be a regular routine each time we attend a family function and the couple I mentioned are attending.
