| | Places to find good (AND CHEAP) Gear < on 6/20/2011 11:49 AM >
| | | Hi everyone! Thought id post this only because I know there are other broke college kids out there with a passion for exploring. Now, Im new to the game myself, and my information may be silly, but just a few tips on where to get decent and inexpensive gear
* Surplus stores/ Second Hand Stores- Im sure every state has one. Army surplus and thrift stores are a great place to find bags, shoes, old clothes and much more. * Harbor Freight Tools- Im not sure where a lot of them are located as far as other states, but here in PA, they are pretty abundant. My dad is a HF addict, and they send out tons of coupons every weekend! I got a nice P-95 respirator for only $11.99!! They have all you need and more. From flashlights, to PPE (personal protection equipment)! Awesome place. * Wal-Mart- An addiction of mine! Obviously there are an abundance of Wally World's around the county (and world for that matter!). They have everything. quality is decent for certain items, and the prices are always great! Try not to over-spend though! * Dollar Stores- Obviously this wouldn't be the place to buy pregnancy tests or medication, but for items like first aid, batteries and snacks, here is the place to go! * Michael's Arts and Crafts Store- Another money-spending place for myself! In their "Under $5" section, you can find all kinds of neat things. I bought a knee pad (like, for gardening) there and also some notepads! You can also buy like, 5 t-shirts for $10 or something! * Amazon.com- Need I say more? Used deals are fantastic! And for exploring, things get dirty and broken from time to time, lets face it! Why pay full price for something you can get used and in amazing condition?! Anywhere else that is good to go for gear? I have to say, im pretty set on my tag-alongs, but id love to hear other opinions!

| | | I agree with you in theory. In as much as it's possible to find GEG (good enough gear) at discount stores. My only problem is that if the gear is needed, then it's obvious that the gear needs to be high quality. For example, I need a flashlight. My safety depends on it. Do I really want to trust my life to a $2 flashlight from Harbor Freight? (Maybe if I bought 5 of em I might feel safe) And sure, $10 bucks worth of HF lights is still cheaper than a Fenix E21 or even a Mag XL50, but who want's to carry all that redundancy? I purchased both my Mag XL100 and my Inova X5 from Target. They were impulse buys, as it just happened to be one of the few times I was on the mainland and near a Target. If I had just Googled the lights and hit the shopping tab, I'm sure I could have gotten them cheaper. Living on an island makes shopping somewhat difficult but I can get almost anything I want online for cheaper than any store within 200 miles. (And I spend way less on shipping than I would on gas) Harbor Freight is a great place for nonessential gear like gloves or hearing and eye protection. They've got tons of cool gizmos and gadgets, but I wouldn't shop there for something as important as a flashlight or a knife. Walmart has saved my butt a few times when money was tight but I hate Walmart with such a bleeding black ulcerous passion that I immediately feel the urge to shower after being in one. If it was up to me, Walmart wouldn't exist. Their business practices have ruined middle class America by underselling local shops with cheap Chinese made crap and they don't give a fuck about their employees. Time was, Sam Wall made a promise to the people that every product sold in Walmart would proudly bear the "Made In America" tag. What ever happened to that? Walmart became the largest company in the US by reneging on a promise. I sincerely hope Mike Duke gets testicular cancer and dies. Rot in hell, ya douchenozzle. If, like me, you live in an area where the nearest shopping center is 30 miles away, or you can't bring yourself to step foot in a particular store, I suggest just sticking to Google shopping. Ebay can be a mess sometimes and Craigslist can be scetchy, though I've used both with good success. (I bought my most recent boat off Craigslist. 21' sailboat on a trailer for $500) The interweb is your friend. Use it.
Where'd my oh there it is go?...damn. |

| | | http://www.sportsm...com/net/Main.aspx? Mainly their surplus section. Lots of military bags, clothing, and footwear. First aid stuff as well, and of course, flashlights. Last winter I got 5 sets of long johns (top and bottom) for like 20 bucks.

Arent we ALWAYS waiting on a DX order? If everything werent so cheap, I would quickly get upset with how long it takes to get something from DX. Gotta love them though.
Blah Blah Blah. Shut up and open the damn door. "It's ok Officer, I watch a lot of cop shows on tv, so i am practically one of you guys." - sadly, that didn't work. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jonno23/ All my photos suck. |

| | | REI. But it's only cheap because I work there and wait for coupons to come around too. ;) Also, try JoAnn craft stores sometime. It's just like Michaels and AC Moore. You can find coupons on their website or on a smartphone app, sign up for coupons in store to have them mailed/emailed (which will also inform you about sales, which happen often), or check the paper for them. Or grab some in store as they usually have some which are valid for the following week. [last edit 6/29/2011 8:51 PM by BostonUrbEx - edited 2 times]
