| | using a drone... < on 7/1/2011 2:05 PM >
| | | Hey guys, just stumbled over the AR.Drone (http://www.parrot.com) and was basically wondering if anyone of you has ever (1) thought about using a drone to pre-explore areas or (2) in fact had experience with this one looks like an intelligent way to get a first glimpse on stuff, make cool vids and look for POEs (depending on the range and battery capacity of the drone).
Love what you did with the place!!! |

| | | Cool in theory, but not inconspicuous in the least - generally we see other people walking around doing their own thing constantly and pretty much ignore each other. What you don't see everyday is a drone flying around

Well... you would if we all started using them ;) But yes, I do see your point. The advantage, however, lies in not being seen yourself as you could in fact stay in your car or someplace else and just navigate via your iphone or ipad which doesn't really raise that much suspicion (depending - of course - on the distance you have to stay in). As long as it looks like one is actually playing with that thing I don't think it to raise that much suspicion (while starting or landing the drone). And since it is equipped with a camera which you can stream on your device you could actually just turn away as soon as you see somebody on the premises (and I'm of course only talking about seemingly unsecured areas). I'm not yet convinced what raises more suspicion. Some person checking out possible POEs or locations from the outside in general or a flying thing that looks like a toy...

| | | After thinking about it more - there are definitely some locations where using an RC drone would raise less suspicion. "Practicing flying" would be a great excuse in an open area or out of the way location - I need to get out of the city more...

| | | Seems to be too expensive for something you might have to ditch in case of an emergency. Not to mention that it's partially made of styrofoam and is probably very brittle. I'd hate to have something like that lose range even by a bit and go down, then you will not be exploring for fun but to find the drone and pray to god that it's still in one piece. Nice idea, but in my opinion it doesn't seem too practical due to cost and "what if" situations.

| | | If it accidentally "crashes" you now have a legitimate reason to hop the fence.

| | | Hell!! Buy a broken one and carry it in your backpack on explores. If you get rousted, just pull it out and say you only went in to retrieve it.

it's cheaper than losing a $400 helicam platform. I lost mine in a guarded power plant when it got too close to a gutter downspout.

Or..for entries just fling the broken sucker over the fence, wait a minute, and go pick it up, and fling it through an open window (or a closed one). Reverse procedure for exit.

| | | long story short, some friends and i went and explored a complex of buildings that one of us had been watching for some time. old chemical/medical labs and offices, warehouses, plenty of promise. in some of the buildings at the rear of the property we found boats, jet skis and no less than a hundred or more bikes in varying states of disrepair. shortly we were joined by a group of guys on quad bikes, dirt bikes and a car who confronted us and when we declared our stupid innocence they let us ( with some specific restrictions ) check some of the other buildings out. one of them produced a flip screen nokia and called us over to see something. a moment later a remote control plane appears flying over the building and on the screen of his phone a live feed from a mounted camera, actually the footage was high quality with no lag. i could warble on but down the track it appears they are minding the gardening side of some less than wholesome business peoples enterprises on site. we were basically chased out when we 'disobeyed' their requests not to go to certain buildings, a very tense afternoon indeed. but some awesome buildings.
