| | | Posted by willskith What's this about emo kids trying to act hard or getting mad over someone not respecting their space at a show? | Respecting space? Really!? It's a punk rock show. Shit happens. And yes, Acting hard, as in, I'm going to be a tough guy and start a fight when other people are just trying to enjoy themselves. I've only ever seen punks act that way. | Oh? And where they wearing studded leather jackets and mohawks? Insinuating that there is a negligible link between hardcore and emo? When I saw Algernon Cadwallader they were playing a show that Negative Approach was headlining. Oh, and there were tons of kids stage diving during Algernons set and nobody got mad. Smiles all around, everyone was raging. | Raging? You sir just pointed out just how "negligible" the link is between Hardcore and Emo with the use of that single word. The generalizations you make would be no different than someone stating that punk is weak and uncreative because it tends to adopt one of two extremes: nihilism or politically correct leftism. | Generalizations exist for a reason. Because sometimes they are quite apt. Take Jello Biafra or Henry Rollins for example. Sure I like the Dead Kennedys, but I'll bet you Jello voted for Jerry Brown For governor last election. It would obviously be an entirely mislead statement, but no less accurate than yours stating that emo = sadness. | But I didn't say Emo = Sadness. I just happen to think emotion in itself is not entirely substantial enough of a subject to base an entire genre on. Punk was not entirely nihilism or leftism. In fact, I happen to think defining punk is a bit absurd. It was an amalgam of so many different things and people. From Homosexuals, junkies, philosophers, to art school drop outs, musicians, rich suburbanites, and the insane and damaged. It is a much harder thing to truly define. Emo? Well? There is not much there. Just because a lot of what many emo bands (popular ones, at least) write about is personal issues doesn't mean that they aren't able to focus on aspects of humanity deeper than "my girlfriend dumped me." There are lots of upbeat and posi emo songs. Very well written ones, at that, whether you like the music or not. | Sure. As I said, I like Embrace. But most of it is not to my liking and there is an element of elitism in Emo, that I hate in it's older retarded brother Hardcore. I honestly don't like lots of emo since it is often too slow/downbeat for my tastes. However, adopting the stereotype that emo is nothing but miserable bullshit is just as much a disservice to the genre as assuming all skinheads are racist, that all spiky punks sniff glue, or that straight edge is a militant gang. Punks have very polarizing (and arbitrary) labels for everything, much of it is very misused.
| I know the roots of the skinhead movement, the image of the "spiky punks" is a caricature turned reality, and straightedgers can be some of the most uppity, self righteous wankers since the christian right. My point, I'm not doing Emo a disservice, as I'm only reflecting back my observations. They did themselves a disservice.

| | | Posted by dirt So I did. If you want a question answered, Be prepared for an actual response. I know you were expecting "emo R fags Dur hur hur". It's kinda absurd to get butthurt to a thought out response.
