I am Dr. Kirkbride
| | Re: What Kirkbrides still exist? <Reply # 81 on 6/19/2012 7:30 AM >
| | | To address the original topic. There are 29 Kirkbrides standing in various states of completion (missing admin, wings, only an admin, etc.) There are 17 complete Kirkbrides and existence. I also count 69 as having been built, meaning 40 have been completely demolished. [last edit 6/19/2012 7:33 AM by McNulty - edited 1 times]

Do you count Buffalo as complete?
Buildings have two natural enemies- water, and bears. |

I was, but now that you mention it, yeah, it is missing part of its right wing. Make that 16, and who knows how many of them might be missing something similar.

I know it was complete. I am talking about how many stand in their completed form today.

| | | Some of the connectors appear to be more modern than the rest of the structure. Do you know if they're original? And if not, were those parts of the building originally connected by something else?

It originally had connectors. It is not a kirkbride but one of the pavilion style hospitals built to try to combine the benefits of the congregate plan with benefits of the congregate plan, such as lower cost to build and ease of case segregation. It would be in the same category of transitional places like Shepppard and Pratt, Norristown, Bangor, Clarindia, Middletown, etc. Caught between a Kirkbride and a cottage plan.

The hospital, yes. The building, no. The hospital itself is old as hell from the early 1800s but that was located in Manhattan where Columbia University is now. The building now, in White Planes in from the 1890s when they moved out of the city.

| | | I'm surprised no one has mentioned anything about the Traverse City Michigan Kirkbride. Its a little odd because the wings are still there but they had to rebuild the admin section for some reason or another (For some reason I think it burned, but I could be wrong). It sat abandoned for years, but they have turned half of it into trendy shops and condos. www.thevillagetc.com

| | | Has anyone made it into the Fergus Falls Hospital since it's been closed? Other than the guided tours of course. I've been told from a former employee that it's completely sealed and pretty secure. I'd love to make the trip there before they tear it down.
