| | | Posted by Sceptic Hello everyone. I've been shooting with the T1i now for almost three years. I was thinking of making an upgrade, maybe to a 7d (but is it worth it? I've read that they are somewhat/very similar) or to a ff 5d series. But i have my beloved ef-s lenses (10-22 canon, 30mm 1.4 sigma, 60mm macro 2.8). These are the options I've thought about 1. Hold onto the t1i, and try to pick up a 1dmk ii, or 5d mkii I already have a tamrom 28-75mm which will fit a ff 2. Purchase a 7d and still have the ability to use my ef-s lenses 3. Wait for the 7Dmkii to be released and purchase the 7D when the price takes a drop. I would hate to sell my ef-s lenses just to purchase some nice glass for a ff. I am happy with the lenses I have picked up and would like to hold onto them I welcome all suggestions and opinions... What would you do?
| I was in a similar situation, only I had a 7D. I hear you on the sf-s lenses and hesitating about upgrading to FF and having to almost start all over. Once Canon announced the 6D I was sold. So I bought the 6D and sold my 7D, 10-22, and Sigma 30mm 1.4. I'm in a unique position as a professional photographer to have a awesome business partner that has all L Series Lenses we would ever need that I can use any time. So even though my personal glass is down to just my 50 1.4 (gold anyway) I'm not left in the dark. But I will say I'm glad I decided to finally go FF, because now there's no going back. It's a tough commitment but worth it in the long run. In regards to the 6D specifically, it's pretty bad ass. I bougght 4 32gb cards right away too. The Wireless feature is awesome and works great. The GPS thing, is just eh to me. I have it shut off. But the best part of having those amazing FF images. And for $2099 that's a pretty affordable price point to be able to get into a FF body. I'm currently waiting for the grip to come off back order so the camera has a little more heft. Size wise it is almost IDENTICAL to the 7D when I compared them side by side but since the top is plastic (which by the way you can NOT tell. It feels like metal) it's a little lighter in weight then the 7D. I know that was kind of the point (FF in a more compact body) of the camera as well. Anyway, good luck. I say FF.

| | | Posted by -Rio- I have pretty much got my mind set on a Pentax K-30. $699 with a 18-55mm lens or $1099 with a 18-135mm lens which is the one i am thinking of buying. Most people on here seem to be using Canon or Nikon. Any reasons not to buy or disadvantages to the K-30? i know they do not have nearly the same number of lenses to pick from as Canon or Nikon. but i really only want 3 lenses anyway. I'll provably also buy a 50mm prime and down the road a wide angle lens. (any suggestion for what size to get for a wide angle lens, with out too much distortion?
as a perk... i get to pick from 3 colors!!! plain black, blue or white.
| Well, where to start? The main selling point of Pentax is the advertised reverse compatibility. If you intend to use lots of old-school lenses, it's great. Just bear in mind that you aren't getting to use the best of what that glass has to offer on a crop body, and Pentax still doesn't have a full-frame offering. By this point, almost everything has been adapted to mount on a canon body. a $7 adapter will allow you to mount nikon lenses on that shit. Seriously. So it comes down to this: Pentax is great if you want to use old lenses you can't afford in the first place to a quarter of their potential. Canon is your best bet if you want to eventually be able to use every lens ever made, ever. Nikon is the only reason I have photos of clowns having the shit beat outta them, and still thought it was funny. Also, a 50mm prime on a crop body is virtually useless for UE unless your subjects really know how to pose. Then, it's beautiful.

| If you're happy with what you have, stick with it. Only upgrade if there's some obvious (to you) reason. The 7D has some advantages over the T1i, including weather-proof build, better autofocus and light sensitivity (see URL below), but those only matter if they are important to you. http://snapsort.co...anon_EOS_Rebel_T1i I would give the same advice for upgrading to a full-frame camera. Full-frame cameras are good in low light, they give a wider field of view, and a little better image quality, all of which are good for UE work. But if you're happy with what you've got, don't waste your money. Here's the link comparing T1i to 5D mark ii, and below that, a comparison of 1.6 crop to "full frame." http://snapsort.co...anon_EOS_Rebel_T1i http://digital-pho...h-is-right-for-you Finally, you might think about borrowing or renting the camera you're interested in and try it out for a week to see how it works for you. In the end, go with the camera that makes the most sense for you.

| | | You COULD get an expensive digital camera that's made mostly of plastic, and will be out of date in 3 years...OORRR you could shoot film!!!! Get a Minolta XD-11 body in PERFECT condition (not hard to find) for $100. Then pick up a couple of (GREAT) prime lenses, the 24mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, and 135 2.8 can each be had for under $100. Then shoot some T-max, Velvia, Ektar, and Portra...scan @ 40MP on a dedicated scanner, and WHAM-O, you've got yourself a better quality image than 99% of DSLRs out there. Better dynamic range, better resolution, better color, and NO DIGITAL NOISE...only lip smacking film grain. That's what I'm doing, you can go ahead and do whatever you want.

| I'd say go for it, but as a Pentax user I'm a little biased. Salamiavenger Is a little too dismissive of the idea that there could be a formidable camera beneath that "one selling point" that he boiled them down to. I've been shooting with a Pentax K-r (their entry level camera from 2009) now for about 2 years and can personally attest there's a hell of a lot more to it than that. The backwards compatibility is a huge plus. If you're like me, you're on a crazy cheap budget. In my case, buying old manual lenses was the difference between me owning a lens, or just not. The 50mm, don't bother. I paid $400 for a Pentax 50mm 1.4 that I've taken UEing maybe 3 times, and wish I wouldn't have wasted the money. It's a fantastically brilliant lens, grain sharp with amazing depth of field control, but I just can't find a use for it. I should have just stuck with my old manual 50 F2. And as Salamiavenger said, it's because the sensor size. With APS-C, it's actually about a 75mm, a typical portrait lens. Not very useful for UE. 35mm would equate to 50. For that, I recommend the mid 80s Sigma zoom master 35-70 F2.8-4. I was given one for free, and I'm absolutely in love with it. Looks like this http://images02.ca...a-Nikon-Cuenca.jpg Finding one on ebay will probably cost you between $20-80 depending on condition, and luck. It's totally worth it. Here's a couple shots I took "underutilizing" this lens, both at F8. Signals by itsbudda, on Flickr _IGP4860 by itsbudda, on Flickr And someting more portraitey, shot at F3.5 sheeit_3 by itsbudda, on Flickr What's cool about Pentax is they're kinda like Nintendo. Sure they could go the route of XBox and PS3 and just keep boosting specs, but they asked the question "Yeah, but what ELSE can it do?" (Btw the Wii-U is fucking amazing fun) So besides cheap awesome lenses, what else can it do? So they answer this by cramming all sorts of drastic features into their cameras. The K-r only cost $600. I believe it was the first camera in it's class to offer 25600 iso, so Images shot as high as 6400 have good quality. For instance, this was shot at 6400 and iirc, this was shot at 4000 http://fc04.devian...6ad77535b3919a.jpgThe K-r also shoots 6fps, has auto mirror lockup on self timer, interval shooting, built in hdr, compatibility with screw drive and supersonic lenses, auto bracketing, and too many other features to list. It doesn't play like a $600 camera. It's far more comparable to the D90 than a D5000. As expected, the K-30 Is a continuation and improvement upon such. Also with the now k-30, it's weather sealed and built like a tank. Perfect for UE. You won't get that in a canon or nikon for that price. Even my plastic k-r has proved nigh indestructible so far. I only have barely any complaints with the K-r. It had a defective E-dial when I bought it, but pentax fixed it and shipped it back within only 15 days with absolutely no hassle. Didn't try to dodge the warranty claim at all even though i beat the shit out of my camera and it showed with numerous scuff marks, and the warrantee was a week from expiration when I sent it in. Other than autofocus that's kinda finicky in low light, and 25fps video, I have nothing but praise for this awesome camera. Although in all honesty, nowadays, any camera by any company is gonna exceed your expectations.

| I ended up buying the K30, i am very happy with it. The weather seal was a huge point for me as i am outdoor quite a lot, also quite useful for UE. An other big selling point was, the first time i held one. The grip was great, it feels like i have a good hold of it. Other cameras felt like i was holding it by my finger tips with my right hand. Only more expensive models offered a similar feel. The 50mm lens was not intended for urban exploration. It has given me some amazing pictures and gave me an appreciation for prime lens. A 35mm prime is on my wish list. For UE I am currently saving for a ultra wide angle lens, the widest possible with out being a fisheye. The 18mm-150mm lens that came with the camera is nice. But i find it a bit limiting in confined areas (still, an improvement on my old camera). I guess it is the draw back to not having a full size sensor. Otherwise i have nothing bad to say. I couldn't justify buying a top of the line camera with zero experience with an SLR camera nor do i have the $ for it. My camera knowledge is definitely limited at the moment. Going from my Canon G11 to the K30 was big step. I am on a steep learning curve with all the features and manual controls. 1. First night with my new camera using my 50mm prime lens. No photoshop was done to this shot. 2. friend of mine, also taken with the 50mm prime 3. Ive posted this on an other thread all ready. One of my first outing UE with the K30. Taken with my 18mm-150mm lens. I wish it had a wider angle... otherwise excellent all around lens.

| | | hey guys I'm just about to by a new camera, I've been using an old Cannon S5IS. I'd just like some opinions on these two cameras. My price range I'm willing to pay is between $200-$300. The first one I had my eye on and thought was pretty nice. http://www.amazon....ords=olympus+e-pl5 But than my friend at radio shack told me he had this in stock. http://www.amazon....KKOR/dp/B0073HSJR4 I see the coolpix has more MP for less of a price. Plus I'll be using my friends radio shack discount, which is I think 5-10% off. Any thoughts on this? I'm not too much of a camera guru. Thanks!
