| | I gotta ask < on 11/17/2013 8:27 PM >
| | | I know these are always asked but i couldnt find the threads on them, and the ones i did find didnt help when UER: how needed is a tetanus shot? should i get mine anyway? I god a respirator and it has no air leaks, but i've got a fat face, so it squishes my cheeks out and makes them looked puffed out, should i return it and get a bigger one? I saw a thread on what to bring, would a notepad, camera equipment, basic first aid, writing tools and flashlights be considered too much for you all? (this one was answered, but i'd like an updated response from some of you) when carrying a tripod, how do you all carry them attached to a backpack, i think i found a way but there has to be an easier method how does one work up the balls to go on the first explore, mine would have to be alone since no one near me can explore when i can when you go to a place, how do you park? do you park your car a block away and walk over to it? do you bike 3 miles? i have a mustang so anywhere it shows up will be more obvious that i'm not some utility worker if i park out front i think thats about it, thank you for your time!
Apparently that DID just happen. And I AM proud of it |

| | | I got a tetanus shot because it was free. I don't normally injure myself, but i have stepped on rusty nails and scraped my limbs. Not sure if i would have contracted tetanus, but there is always the possibility. I don't use a respirator, but there are a lot of people that would highly recommend it. I debate it from time to time, and in the future, i'll probably regret never using one. I usually bring my camera bag with my tripod mounted on the exterior (made to do this), camera and accessories (obviously), headlamp, flashlight(s), multi-tool, gloves, T.P., hand sanitizer, snacks and beer. It's really up to you what you think you'll need/use. I just bring the essentials, like beer.

Strongly recommended, but I don't have mine. I take full responsibility if I get sick.
I god a respirator and it has no air leaks, but I've got a fat face, so it squishes my cheeks out and makes them looked puffed out, should i return it and get a bigger one? |
Is it comfortable?
I saw a thread on what to bring, would a notepad, camera equipment, basic first aid, writing tools and flashlights be considered too much for you all? (this one was answered, but I'd like an updated response from some of you) |
Camera, first aid (recommended), multiple flashlights and batteries (if exploring into the night). The rest is up to you.
when carrying a tripod, how do you all carry them attached to a backpack, i think i found a way but there has to be an easier method |
Some backpacks have an elastic sting on them you can tie it to that. I choose to carry.
how does one work up the balls to go on the first explore, mine would have to be alone since no one near me can explore when i can |
The same way a parachutist jumps out of a perfectly good airplane the first time.
when you go to a place, how do you park? do you park your car a block away and walk over to it? do you bike 3 miles? i have a mustang so anywhere it shows up will be more obvious that I'm not some utility worker if i park out front |
I would park in a nearby business parking lot.

| | | It's always best to park a distance away and hike/walk in. I don't think you'll find many who will argue this opinion. Where you park does sometimes need a bit of thought. 24 hr businesses are prime. Some business owners might throw a fit, but a church doesn't seem like a bad idea. Doubt they would mind, especially if they aren't using it at that time.

| | | Cool questions. We haven't had a good beginner's thread for a while now. My answers will probably be the same as others, but it's ok to get a feel for what is consensus and what is purely preference.
how needed is a tetanus shot? should i get mine anyway?
|
Being that we primarily explore abandoned, run down locations it just makes sense to get a tetanus shot. It's cheap and easy insurance against a major medical illness.
I god a respirator and it has no air leaks, but i've got a fat face, so it squishes my cheeks out and makes them looked puffed out, should i return it and get a bigger one?
|
Sometime back there was a pretty good thread about respirators. You might want to search to see if you can find it. Are you concerned with how you look or how the mask performs? I would assume proper fit is the primary concern. If it is uncomfortable, leading you to not wear it, then certainly return it for one that fits comfortably. Safety gear that you don't wear is useless.

I tend to drag along too much stuff, but part of that is the types of places I go. Since you are just starting into exploring, I would suggest that you take too little rather than too much. It's easy to get into the "just in case" mind set when packing gear. Unless you plan on taking photography notes or GPS coordinates, skip the pen and paper bit. I have a decent first aid kit that I keep in the car, but for my backpack it's minimal. Bacterial ointment, a couple of gauze pads, and a couple of butterfly strips (to temporarily close up a laceration. Man-up if it needs less than that. More than that and you will need professional help anyway. I think a small flashlight is almost mandatory even if it's just for seeing what is in a store room or dark corner. Also handy if you get carried away exploring and you get out later than you expect. I'm assuming that you are taking a cell phone? Consider turning the ringer off so you don't unintentionally announce your location.

A lot of backpacks have all kinds of pockets and straps, but none of them work particularly well for holding a tripod. If you have a backpack dedicated to exploring (I do since they get filthy underground) consider sewing a loop to your backpack. You can hand sew it if you don't have access to a machine. http://www.strapworks.com has an amazing selection of webbing, various premade straps, and clips needed for your modifications. Webbing Tutorial Here's a basic lesson.

Just go out, find some place, and walk around. Park where it's convenient and don't look nervous. Don't pretend to be someone you aren't. Your first explore probably won't be epic but you have to start somewhere. Now days I would laugh at my first mine explore, but simple as it was, I will always remember it. Have fun! Abby Normal

| | | When I was in alabama we would always search for churches to park at when doing this, something to keep in mind about church parking though. While in business (wednesday or sunday or any other function they may be having) is considered public property so any other time is considered private property. I found this out when I got thrown into the slammer, the cops wanted to search our car and impound it luckily it was saturday during one of the biggest football games in the south so no one was at the church the cops were real pissed they couldnt tow our car but they knew either way things were going to be shitty when we got back. Needless to say when we finally got out of jail our car had been broken into and searched throughly. Parking at a business can be iffy seeing as most owners will watch and make sure people arent just using the space and not shopping we had to talk our way out of getting towed several times
