Its damn sad to see this 103 year old building has come down, Atlanta has so very few old things like this left now. I will attempt to give a brief summery of the history of this location for all those with severe ADD like me who don't care to click on the links.
The Atlanta chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was founded on April 15 of 1891 and began soliciting donations to organize. By 1895 the Cotton States and International Exposition was held in Atlanta and many states paid to erect buildings in what was later named the Piedmont Park area. Among them Massachusetts elected to recreate an exact copy of the original 1759 Craigie House used by General Washington as his headquarters during the Revolutionary War and later donated it to the D.A.R. However by 1909 almost all the buildings were declared unsafe for the public and were demolished. From the Craigie House were salvaged windows, doors, boards and bricks and probably used to construct the building that we see today. Thomas Morgan was most likely the architect of this building as his wife was very involved in the Atlanta chapter of the D.A.R. and he had a hand in constructing many of the historic buildings in Atlanta, some of which still stand today. The Masonic corner stone was laid in 1910 and the building was named the "Craigie House" in honor of the previous building and formally opened in 1911. Sadly it was neglected very badly during the Depression era and only received sporadic repairs during the decades that followed. The roof and North wall had always been serious structural problems during the lifespan of the building and they were never properly addressed. This led to the decision to vacate the building in 1999 and it was eventually sold to a developer in 2001 who than went bankrupt. No one will ever know if it was the renovators removal of the second floor, the weak roof or the crumbling North wall that led to collapse but on February 13 2014 it all came down in the snow. So long D.A.R.
