| | | Hi, and welcome to UER! UER is a place to share information, photos, and stories. Unfortunately, some explorers believe that they have the exclusive rights to control who gets to see a particular piece of information or a particular place, and they intimidate new members until those members are forced to take down their posts and leave the site. This type of behaviour is NOT OK. If you are asked, either in public or in private, to remove your post, please ignore it and report it to the moderating team so that the person who is asking you can be spoken to. Thanks, and keep exploring!

| | | Posted by Avatar-X Unfortunately, some explorers believe that they have the exclusive rights to control who gets to see a particular piece of information or a particular place, and they intimidate new members until those members are forced to take down their posts and leave the site. | Please hear me out; I'm trying to have a respectful discussion: The quote above is a prime example of the big misunderstanding surrounding this topic. No-one (that I've ever spoken to or that I've witnessed on any exploring forum anywhere) believes that they have the "exclusive rights to control who gets to see a particular piece of information or a particular place". The people that "believe they have the exclusive rights" exist only in your imagination. Clearly there has been a misunderstanding and I would like to try to explain the other side of the argument. The very same reasons it's not a good idea to post entrances are the very same reasons it's not a good idea to post sensitive locations. There is no difference. If you defend not posting entrances, you can quote those words in defense of not posting sensitive locations. Sometimes there are places that just can't support extra traffic. Sometimes methods of entry are very particular and best handed down in person. Now I totally agree that locals can take it too far sometimes and it can seem like harassment. But just because a noob got into a location doesn't mean we should throw our hands up and say "welp that location must not be sensitive if that noob got inside. Nevermind the increased traffic that will bring the heat down on it as a result". There are in many cases good reasons why places shouldn't be posted on the most popular exploring website in the world for all to see. Often, people who are new to this hobby will try to get into something good and use that as their introduction to the community. I don't blame them. I did this myself on a local forum. Guess what happened! My post was removed. It was explained to me why and I totally understood. And then I went on to explore the place with the same person who deleted it and I joined an awesome community. There were no hard feelings. This new rule makes it seem like it's cool to post anything and who cares who it pisses off, especially the local bullies. Right off the bat, there's hostility where there otherwise might not have been. The local bullies might actually be super nice and knowledgeable people. Now all of a sudden, the locals don't have the right to politely engage the poster in conversation. The rule should consider the tone and content of the conversation. If it's civilized then the rule should not apply, especially if the two parties could have otherwise reached an agreement. Notably missing from the forum rules is the rule of not giving away locations, yet most of the people here agree on this. Personally, I'm a fan of using made up names and vague information (if any). There should be a rule to protect locations because without them, we have nothing to explore. Most people can't take credit for getting inside a place and none of us built them. So show the place your respect by not handing it out for free to anyone with an internet connection. Why is this not a rule?

| | | In the end, its Avatars forum , Avatars rules, your point is mute.
also, side note, looking at your stars, I see you don't have a donor star, which means you have not donated any money to help the monthly expense of the forum, but yet you feel you can log onto this website, provided to you for free, and tell the admin to change his rules to yours... I don't get that logic at all... thats like going to someones house for a free dinner, and after you eat, you command them to repaint the walls because you don't agree with the current color

| | | I appreciate the vote of confidence, Mike. While donations are always appreciated, our hosting is now donated by an amazing local company, Beanfield, so I no longer have to guilt people into donating each month (that's why the banners and nag notices are now gone) Anyway, donor or not, I welcome anyone's opinion. But it's important to remember that this is not a democracy, and that as the owner and operator of this privately-owned website, the rules I set out are the ones that we all follow. If you disagree, and feel that you can't follow the rules, you are welcome to "vote with your feet" so to speak, and discontinue use of the site. Nobody is forcing you to be here. -av

| | | Posted by Gunner Trees Well this rule clearly demonstrates that AV likes newbs blowing up spots more then the wishes of vetern, trusted explorers of the community.
| I believe my conversation above also clearly illustrates this point. I hoped that by exposing the error in his logic, it might help him recognize the real reason that these things are going on. He's blaming the symptoms as they bubble to the surface and not the cause. I would think anyone with years of exploring to his credit would understand this and it seems the vast majority of everyone else on here, except him, feels the same. And to the "vote with your feet" comment, please do notice how long I've been here and how little I post. That should indicate how little I value the forums here. This could be a great place, but the way its run is not only causing problems here, but it can also have real world consequences. Still, there's a head in the sand mentality and a "this is my party" disregard of valuable member's concerns. So yes, I will continue to vote with my feet as I have for the 6 years I've been a member here.
