Once one of the largest steel mills in the world, this plant employed over 20,000 people in it's heyday. But as with most American steel companies they fell on hard times in the 70s as demand for steel decreased and cheaper, foreign steel began to flood the market.
The vast 1,300 acre site was almost completely demolished in the 90s. Very little of the land has been reused, most is just a overgrown lot. Some windmills have been put up in recent years and a few businesses operate from the property. The only remaining buildings were used as coal breakers, there are maybe 8-10 left and it's quite a hike to see them all. I think we walked over 6 miles on this unseasonably warm February day.
