| | | I'm sorry, but I have a couple of database questions. < on 3/22/2017 6:58 PM > | Reply with Quote
| | | I feel like I have more questions than anything else. I was planning to place at least a couple of locations in the DB now that I can, but this brought up a question, or two, or three, or more. Not even sure if this is the place to post it. Read through a couple of archived LDB posts, but did not see answers. What is worthy of being put into the database? Any abandoned place I come across? How about a place that is abandoned but is sealed up right now? That abandoned farm house in the middle of nowhere that might not have any interest to anyone other than myself? Or is just being abandoned make a location worthy of being entered into the database of abandoned sites? An unrelated, but still related to the DB question, do the entries, including photos, stories and such, show up in a google search? Or is the DB encrypted in such a way that the average Joe Googler won't come across super top secret places? Thanks, and sorry.

| | | Ok I'll try to answer even though my DB experience is minimal. It does NOT need to be abandoned feel free to explore something active, if its cool and you think others will enjoy it add it. Worthy is a relative term some goofball put a crop circle in the damn DB, shameful... http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=31818 but it must have been interesting to him. As for Google searches any location you add can be restricted to full members only. If its listed as demolished it will default to public viewable. I suggest not using real names but most people here don't agree with me on that which just proves I don't know much I guess. Anyway, I have not been arrested yet, (yes it can happen). Please make sure its not already in the DB if it is we have to delete yours and you can add your pics to the pre-existing one. (it happens) Just driving up to a truck stop parking lot and snapping a few pics of the restaurant exterior is generally just gonna get deleted. But theres plenty of lame locations in the DB already going back 12+ years so give it a try we will let you know if its no bueno or needs info. Actually explore it is a rule of thumb don't just steal pics from National Geographic and call it an exploration. (yes its been done) Describe the location give us what ever history you can if you cant just say so, leaving out information might gonna get it deleted too. Also feel free to PM a moderator if you have questions.

| | | Posted by southshore It would be nice to get someone to manage the UEBD a bit again. I thank all the mods for their validations in there but there is just a lot of misinformation in there- intentional, unintentional, and outdated. I know Dijital was doing it for a while but he seems to have gone MIA lately.
| Mike had to devote more time to family, if you see something in a DB entry that just isn't right and you can fix it, then go ahead and fix it. Or send me or any other mod a PM and let us know the problem. I would like to keep it perfect but you have to understand I send notes to location creators all the time and ask them to fill out more or better info or upload at least one gallery and they just blow me off. We have over 9000 locations, I cant verify each one has correct latitude and longitude listed. You are not required to list the exact coords anyway. I have two solutions for entries that don't provide at least the minimal information: if the creator wont fix it and I cant fix it I will just remove it, how about that? Heres more from the Head Wolf on the matter: http://www.uer.ca/...asp?threadid=32330 edit: I should have mentioned that moderator Emperor Wang has spent a huge amount of time, probably more than anyone cleaning up DB entries with misspelled city names, city names not capitalized, other common errors in an effort to keep it a decent resource for y'all.

| I have nothing but respect for all that the moderators do on this site, always have and always will. I have been doing what I can to clean up and review sites that I am extremely familiar with. I love the DB think that it's a phenomenal resource. Obviously I am not a moderator, but would it be worth it to find a non mod to run the DB? Pretty much like what Mike was doing. He did a great job when he was able to work on it. Seriously though- thank you all for what you do.

| I was laid off almost a year ago (a situation that will be rectified on Monday as I go back to work!) and with the time off one of the many things I did was to go through the UERDB and mark all of the U.S. locations on my own map. I would estimate that 80% or so of the coordinates in the DB are correct or close enough that if you're in the area you can find it. I also began the process of updating many of the locations that are no longer in existence. This was a MASSIVE undertaking as I had to go to outside resources to verify that what I was seeing on Google Earth wasnt just a bad coordinate. It was such daunting task that I eventually gave up the entire enterprise. While it may not be a requirement to enter the address or the coordinates, I really do not see the point of imputing bogus ones. If you want others to find the place on their own or you consider the place "too good to share" then dont enter it! The only peepee slap I ever got from AV (and he was extremely nice about it BTW) was when I flamed a guy for using the real name of a location. He said that the purpose of UER was to share locations so we can all enjoy them. While I understand there are varying opinions to this (and I happen to disagree in many but not all cases) I do believe that the DB is a resource that should be used by other explorers to find locations they may be interested in. If others cant find the location what's the point of even making the DB entry? Thats my 2 cents worth, and I'm sticking by it...for now. | | | Posted by Peptic Ulcer please use ACTUAL GPS coordinates
| So I just put in my first location, I grabbed the co-ordinates from Google Earth, then converted the to decimal degrees for input and when I click on the show me this location on a map it takes me to rural China. Interestingly enough there looks to be an abandoned site at these co-ordinates in China and I have added this to my exploring map in case I am ever in the neighborhood... Road trip anyone? Anyway, currently trying to locate the error to fix it. Just thought I would post as an FYI. I don't want to get in trouble for using erroneous co-ordinates. EDIT: Issue fixed, totally a user error. But for reals, anyone down for a China trip?
