Abandoned for 15+ years but everything is still working? < on 10/23/2017 8:00 PM > | Reply with Quote
Well, that’s not how our exploration was supposed to end… After spending two hours in this abandoned building, the alarm went off for some reason. In our whole life we never ran as fast as on this day. However, let’s wind back to the beginning.
During our urbex road trip in Austria our local friends lead us to Clinic Moss. It should become the highlight of our journey. The power was still on. And there was running water, too. It’s astonishing to see an abandoned place in such pristine condition although the mailbox was opened the last time 15 years ago!

You won’t find any vandalism here. The whole interior is very clean and the name “Clinic Moss” is actually misleading. At least when you’re exploring the main building. Because there’s a second part of the house which distinguishes itself very much from the first one.

We don’t know much about Clinic Moss. Information makes itself rare. Even on the internet where you usually find everything. But that’s probably for the best; otherwise the attention of too many people would be drawn to this abandoned site.

Everything inside here indicates that this facility was a rehab center a long time ago. The main building has several rooms for hospital beds but also for courses. While some chambers where completely empty, others were lumbered up. Next to offices there were seminar rooms too.
The second part of the building was left to rot some decades earlier. Next to a swimming hall there also is a gym.

Very interesting video, the quality is amazing, well done! You have a new subscriber! I'm surprised that this place is still in good condition after being abandoned for all these years.

Awesome pictures and write up! That is pretty crazy that you just randomly tripped the alarm. Could be pretty faulty equipment with no maintenance and you just so happened to be in the right spot to hit that dusty motion sensor.
Posted by Gamewolf66 Sometimes these kinds of places are still supplied with electricity. No clue why, seems like a waste of power.
I heard (not entirely sure) that municipalities sometimes leave power on to places to keep an eye on scrappers and such. Broken circuits or strange power surges trip notices to the plant.

Magnificent video! I love key boxes anyway, but it's wonderful to see one full of usable ones!
Thanks for posting! ^.^!

That's interesting... now I'm left wondering if breakers in facilities actually have the telemetry to send out micro data like that. Surges, fair enough, that's easily seen and trackable, but a broken circuit?
Perhaps I'm three-quarters caveman. I have to ask an engineer.
About the electricity tracking, not my caveman-itude.

My comment is completely unverified information and my caveman-itude could definitely be wrong in understanding. There are people on here far more knowledgeable than I that I am hoping come along to verify or debunk my hearsay.
I didn't think as far as telemetry in my head. Wonder if it'd have to go through the breaker or perhaps like a phone line signal?
My initial thought when having read this conversation on Reddit, if I recall, was more simple. Monthly use variances or bills sent to a city worker who is supposed to notice jumps or drops. All entirely speculation on my part.

We have had smart meters on our electrical service for about 3 years now (rural Texas)
This type sends data (digital) back to the provider via the power line itself. There are I am told some smart meters that use a separate cell phone signal/service. At this time smart meters here are only used to determine usage (in kwh) I suppose some enterprising employee could deduce from your billing records that your usage was zero for the last 6 months and question your presence or connection or something.
Lots of buildings leave the power on when vacant (and that's not really abandoned is it?) The primary reason is insurance. Some insurance companies wont even insure a building if the power is completely off. I know this because I worked for one of them.
Its a good clue the building is not really abandoned and someone still maintains a financial interest in it. We tend to call things abandoned even when it does not fit the legal definition.
Is the meter running? If it is there is almost certainly an owner or leaser still paying that electric bill somewhere or your power company is just really generous with the juice. People can and do wire around a meter. I bought a house where the previous owners did that. Took me about 3 months to convince the electric company I was not them.

Very interesting place that is full of a bit of mystery.
I think the power is on to preserve the building as we all know how fast a building will go down if there is no climate control.
I was curious if you closed the window that you escaped through lol. And more than likely that alarm is local and not fed to anyone monitoring it, but I could be wrong.

so of course put it in a public thread

Apart from insurance requirements, some property owners will pay for HVAC simply to preserve the building. If the building envelope is secure the interior basically doesn't decay as long as the the temperature and humidity are controlled.
There's also water infiltration from below to consider. If the water table is high you'll need to keep your sump pump powered to keep the basement dry. Otherwise you're risking structural damage that could cost way more than the electric bill in the long run.
Or maybe this address just fell through the cracks at the power company?
In any case, wonderful video tour. Thanks for sharing.

You're exactly right. Especially in more colder climates it's essential to keep heat on in a building during the winter months. Even its its only kept a bit above freezing it will keep the building in good shape for a longer.
More and more buildings I have explored recently have still had power on to some degree. One of the strangest was a convent near my house. Not only was the power still on, but the air conditioning was running! Only a in a few rooms and on full blast. It was quite nice since it was over 90 out that day.
