Awhile back I lived on the east coast in NC. One night soon after I moved down there, my room mate and I found out from our neighbor about the abandoned meat packing plant in Navassa (now demolished). After a Google search for the whereabouts and printing off MapQuest (yes, it was that long ago)directions, us 3 got into my room mate's truck, and away we went. It didn't take long before the printed directions failed us and we were lost in the middle of the country. As we turned onto a dirt road we saw headlights pull up quickly behind us and it didn't take long until the cherries and berries flipped on and we were getting pulled over. The officer approached the window and said he pulled us over for 'a license plate light out'. In all actuality I'm sure he was wondering why 3 guys in a truck with out of state tags were cruising the back roads of NC at midnight. Well our neighbor that was with us had a gun on him, so we alerted the officer about it and handed it to him for safekeeping during our interaction, he was surprisingly cool with it. Well eventually the question came,
"Why are you guys out here at this hour?".
Being lost, we told him the truth that we were going to the meat packing plant. His response,
"That's private property, you can't go there, if you do, you'll be coming with me to the station tonight on a trespassing charge."
After that, he took our ID's and the gun to his car to check everything. A few minutes later he came back up to the window, passing the gun and our ID's back to us.
"Look, if you guys are going to the plant-", he started telling us, us three in unison told him we weren't and we would head back. And then he started again,
"If you guys are going to the plant, I'll let you go. You obviously aren't up to any trouble, you told me about the gun and what you were doing. It's alright. Now do you know how you get there?"
At this we were almost speechless as we handed him our directions. He told us this was way off and that if we followed him he would show us where it was at. And we did just that, followed him for about 5 miles until we pulled up to a path through the woods at the end of a gravel road. We parked, got out to thank him, and his parting words were.
"When you walk down that path your balls better be clankin' cause when I was young we would go there, and that place is scary. Make sure you have your gun on your when you go in, you don't know what type of people will be there at this hour and if you run into any trouble call 911 and I'll be right out."
After that, we thanked him and he left.
Best cop ever.
Unfortunately that night we didn't make it in, as we approached we saw a fire burning in the building and figured it was squatters or something and it would be better to not press our luck and return later, which we did the next day, pictures below.
TLDR; We got pulled over on our way to an abandonment, cop ended up letting us go, showing us where it was, and told us to go in armed.
So have any of you had any positive encounters with law enforcement/security/property owners like this? Like that go above and beyond just being let go?1.
