Opened in 1876, the Hamilton Insane Asylum was created to allocate more space in the GTA for the mentally insane, as they couldn't all go to Toronto. It ran until the 1980's, when it was agreed that Mental Hospitals were unethical, and the patients there were moved. Most of the asylum has been demolished, except for the East House, now known as Century Manor, which was turned into a museum in 1995, but shut down later.
My photos here are from my first visit in 2016, when they hadn't closed up all the windows and doors, and my most recent on in 2019, when everything was boarded up with black boards.
