The is is not your traditional “I found my way into an abandon X or Y” post, but still something I found interesting. Back visiting the Bay Area again and was looking for more legal activities, and found this Nike Missile Site, SF-88.
It’s a fully restored Nike missile site, one of the few that actually held nuclear missiles. DO NOT try to sneak in. It is used for active military training when tours are not available.
https://www.nps.go...ile-site-sf-88.htm When I was there, first Saturday of the month, there were multiple veterans, one actually stationed at this site, that gave a very good tour. Lots of cool information on these missiles and the program itself. At the end, they let us to gown in the actual “silo” and had a dummy missile they loaded, brought up from underground, and raised to the correct firing angle.
1. The missile, raised from in the silo below, ready to be aimed up.
2. Here are some more dummy missiles down inside the silo.
Even though its not as fun as exploring somewhere you're not supposed to be, id still recommend it to anyone in the Bay Area with a free Saturday.
