| | | Hmmm, very good points Mark. I tend to go sans flashlight when needed, or red light to keep it low and dark. On another point about senses:
I tend to keep my hearing senses heightened at all times. I'm naturally a very good listener, I've always been able to hear distant things and listen to multiple things all at once (ie. several conversations going on at once), so I tend to be pretty good at being aware of my surroundings and any sound that happens. I hear a TON of things on missions. It's a good thing though, always a good thing. Although training your hearing is another thing, I'm not sure what would make a good exercise, I guess it definately would involve a bit of clearing your mind and being able to focus on more than one thing. So practice focusing and clearing your mind at the same time, this will not only open up just your sound senses, but all the other ones as well, at least the important ones, like touch, sight, etc. Naturally you'll be able to "feel" your surroundings, and know your surroundings better.

| | | Much of this you probably already know but I think its worth posting. Sound travels farther in the direction the wind is blowing. When there is no wind, conditions are also excellent for hearing. In the dead of night, surrounding noises are more pronounced than at dusk or dawn. In level open terrain, where there are no obstructions to sound waves, noises travel farther . Sound travels farther in the winter. With one technique, a ninja can hear stealthy footsteps at a range of 30 meters. To increase hearing ability one can also hold his breath. There is a ninja technique that uses every cranial cavity to collect vibrations. One cups one's hands behind his ears, tilts his head backwards a little, and opens his mouth. While this may sound somewhat ludicrous, US special forces do teach cupping one's hands behind the ears and turning one's head in the direction of the sound. Many Urban Explorers rely on one sense. Sight. I believe that looking through the lense of a camera also helps promote this. Even with the heightened awareness many experience when out about, in abandoned buildings, hearing isnt at the quality it should be. OPEX alone showed me how visually oriented many are, while walking around many ignored many noises, even though it was the first time in. AV did point out a lot of noises for those of us who were paying attention. Although he had to say it several times because people were asking "is that a person." I believe most of that was due to the fact that they didnt here AV in the first place and didnt notice the footstep sounds earlier. I think the technique and the awareness is a good thing to be semi experienced in.

| | | Ever since I was a little kid I've always paid far more attention to my hearing than most people. Having grown up wandering abandoned places, and being in the wilderness (northern and swamplands) a lot, I always paid close attention to hearing (you can't always see a hidden danger, but often you can pick up on small noises). I basically always notice sounds before anyone else i'm with and have lost count of the number of times that my hearing (and often just my gut feeling) has saved my bacon. I've been on missions with Jolt (black belt in Ninjitsu) who's pretty quick to notice things himself, and everytime, I've noticed the trouble coming before he did. Couple of times it was funny because I heard something close and just reacted, leaping to cover, so he turns to look and i'm gone so he knew then to do the same... When I got to explore out here with a visiting military trained explorer, we both had times during the mission that we heard something the other didn't and at first doubted the others senses, but soon realized we were both very on the ball, and soon we were working in unison by hand signals as we tracked the sounds, and then silently made our way out as I led us to a reliable exit.

| | | Yea as I've said before I always here things very well too. I tend to hear almost every drip, drop, clank, wind whistle, etc inside a building. I hear the cars outside, I hear people walking by. But I've always been very good at listening, it's good to know your surroundings. And listening to your surroundings gives you a pretty good impression of what you're dealing with. I tend to like to perfect my "blind" senses as I call them, the sense of touch and the sense of sound. It works well in dark buildings when the lights are out. Then again, so does perfecting my own natural night vision, which is also pretty good.
