Those were some seriously long escalators, of course. But regardless, it was very civilised. In Tokyo, nobody gave anyone snarky looks for getting in the way. Everyone was invariably patient, and watching crowds patiently moving forward each time another train arrived at a platform was like watching ballet. It too was very civilised. In Australia, people just stand wherever on the escalator, and if there's room, people might squeeze by if they're in a hurry. Lots of 'excuse me' going on. Still civilised, but a little less organised. I await the reports of the first 'escalator rage' fatality from North America
