Calling Atheism a religion is like calling bald a hair color.

But you had better not challenge what their pastor said, since these kinds of people have been conditioned to believe that he has some kind of magic juice on him that makes everything he says true.
| Because a bronze age story book is a far better source of ideas to base your life on than things like asking for evidence, skepticism, and having enough imagination to accept that there are possibilities beyond a sky god that cares about your wiener. And also, where do you get off questioning a persons explicitly stated ridiculous beliefs?
| It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics. | | | Actually (as you of course know) I wasn't even saying that a person's beliefs should be challenged, but just commenting that it is yet another amazing weapon of organized religion that virtually everything is set up to artificially bestow a facade of credibility on religious figures speaking in their church. Millenia of effort has been put into artistically setting the stage to appear authoritative, mostly due to colored glass, uncomfortable seats, a platform, and the dead guy hanging in the background. I have known quite a few priests, ministers, etc, and none of them actually have any such voice of authority that is alleged via the theater of religion.
After all, if they didn't have all of that stuff surrounding them, their flock might realize that the messages don't always make sense.

| I agree, however, I think that is exactly why people's explicitly stated beliefs should be challenged. Someone should have challenged hitler's publicly stated beliefs for evidence, just like someone needs to challenge anyone who says things like their imaginary friend says homosexuality is forbidden or that their imaginary friend will reward them for flying airplanes into buildings.

| Yes, yes, yes, and, if you go back and look, I was certainly NOT saying that a person's beliefs should NOT be challenged. Obviously I think that beliefs should be challenged and should be discarded when appropriate, because I am not an idiot. Maybe my sarcasm confused you when I said; But you had better not challenge what their pastor said |
This was sarcasm. I believed that you would understand that. Consider that belief CHALLENGED.

| | | Posted by G to the Race The atheist/theist fight just demonstrates that we have too much time on our hands.
| Yeah. Totally not important. On one side, you have only your soul and eternity at stake, while on the other side of the debate there are stickers for biology text books, holy wars, laws about sex and marriage based on religion that oppress everyone, entire nations that go to war because god said to, planes crashing into buildings, and other such trivial pursuits. We should talk about something important. Who would win a fight: Gay Jesus or the Flying Spaghetti Monster?
