They're not. In both the BRZ and FR-S it's a Subaru designed boxer engine with a Toyota fuel injection system. The thing that gets me about the BRZ is it's not offered with AWD. No point to spending the premium for a RWD Subaru when there are better and cheaper cars on the market. If anything, AWD is Subaru's trademark. It's not much of an exaggeration to say AWD is the only reason myself and several of my friends are still alive. The ability to lose traction on 2-3 tires and still be able to pull the car back is a life saver.

I like my car, I just wish it was a bit faster. I'm going to drive it until it dies or I graduate, then I'll buy another one. I've heard the LGT's and WRX's have a tendency to ... break.

I don't know what my next vehicle is going to be yet, something in the $20-30k range, something that can survive my asshole driving and be reliable on an hour+ commute in shitty weather. Pre-owned, certified, under 50k miles ... thinking Tacoma or STI hatchback.

Good about the boxer in the BRZ. Seems like a serious sports car at first look. I hope it pwns the Genesis. A quick search shows some tests are pairing them up.

Have never heard anything bad about the Tacoma, but haven't been looking. The 2.7 4 cylinder is the biggest 4 I've heard of, should have decent power.

Agree on the AWD, should be an option on the BRZ. Is there really a market for another RWD 'classic' sports car? Maybe, especially if done right, like the Miata, it will find buyers. The first Miatas appealed to guys who loved the simple British sports cars. Having their cake and working electrics was too much to resist. I guess it became a chic car later, when the lack of power got tiring.

Loved my old '81 Subaru 4WD (not AWD) wagon. It was amazing off road if you didn't high center it. (Of course I did, only once though) The thing even had low range. I'll likely buy an Outback wagon or another Sub some day.

Subaru made at least one inline engine, in the R2, not available in North America. 658 screaming cc's! There was a DOHC Intercooled Supercharger version...

I've driven a Subaru Rex VX- Oddly enough, when I Googled it, the second picture that came up is THE actual car I've driven, so I guess they're rare?

It had a 658 cc EN07Z supercharged inline 4, and was ridiculously fast given the fact it's a .65 liter.

You guys do know that the BRZ would need the front differential right where a pair of cylinders now sits in order for it to be AWD?

I couldn't give fuck all where my cars come from. If they build them better in China, then the US needs to get on it and fix that. I vote with my wallet. If everyone voted with patriotism in mind, we'd still be rocking 1980's designed cars.

maybe if the damn japanese made cars that weren't appliances, i'd consider them more. Right now, its only Nissan and Subaru that make cars that are sporty and fun to drive.
...and its like their dealers are ashamed of them!

This is very true.

My local stealerships won't even keep the faster models on the lot unless they take them in as a trade in 'cause "they don't sell."

And isn't the 350z one of the highest to insure cars because of the amount of teenage/twenty somethings that wreck them? AFAIK, the 370z didn't sell well either.

And we'd still be in 80's cars with 80's car build quality. At least the Japanese could screw a car together well back then.

i told you guys in another thread about calling like 14 different Nissan dealers looking for a 370Z. NOT ONE had one in stock... Oh check that, one DID have a 370Z in stock, but it was a roadster and not what I was looking for.

My mom had a LeBaron. Wow, what a piece of crap. The door falling off on the freeway was a good one. She traded that in on a Fifth Avenue. Just when you thought Chrysler had finished scraping the bottom of the barrel...

I got almost 3 years out of an '85 Daytona that I paid $50 for. It broke a lot but it was rarely stuff that would leave you stranded. Sold it to a friend for $500 and he got another year out of it.
