Hey guys!

Do you have any additives you like? Fuel injector cleaners, etc.

My dad's always used stp cleaners and additives, and I used to run STP fuel injector cleaner a lot but haven't on the Vic or van yet. Been reading great things about the lucas oil complete fuel treatment, but don't know anybody who uses it.

You guys have any preferred treatments?

Not sure if serious? I thought that stuff was mostly regarded to be snake oil...

I seriously wonder if any or all of these additives are snake oil. Are there any independent studies that have tested their efficacy?

I run whatever fuel injector cleaner is on sale about once ever 5 years in whatever I happen to be driving.

And in my diesel I put a bottle of Stanadyne fuel treatment in at every oil change, it's good for the injector pump seals.

Anything too fancy is just snake oil. Especially oil additives. Oil is wonderful just the way it is if you buy a good brand. That Slick50 crap has Teflon particles in it... Teflon is a solid. Think about that for a minute.

I throw a bottle of chevron techron in the tank with every oil change but replacing the spark plugs and plug wires gave a much more noticeable improvement in acceleration.

The chemical wall at work makes me sad, especially when people buy Slick50 and Guaranteed to Pass.

Some of the guys I work with swear by Seafoam, though.

Seafoam is highly spoken of in the jeep community. Never tried it myself. All I know is a lil water sprayed down the throat of a carb at idle will do more than most off the shelf shit.

my dad ran a bottle of seafoam through the engine in the Beretta after my brother changed the intake gasket. He was concerned because we took out 9 or 10 quarts of oily-coolanty goop from the pan. So far, 63,000 miles and the engine hasn't started knocking yet.

Oh... that Lucas oil stabilizer stuff does definitely help in a worn out manual tranny. But it's pretty natural.

when I had the transmission in the Beretta serviced (pretty sure its the 4T40E 4-speed with a 3-position shifter) i had this synthetic 'racing' fluid put in... whatever that meant. I had B&M on the bottles... I wasn't paying too much attention; i was fawning all over a Camaro that was getting an SLP makeover.

Sea Foam increased the fuel economy on a super tired VR6 in a 95 GTI more than I could ever have imagined on a trip down to Tennessee.

At the place I used to work, we used it to polish aluminum lighting truss. You haven't lived until you've hand-polished 10' lighting trusses.

Sport Compact Car Magazine did a pretty legit and scientifically factual analysis of common fuel additives some years ago. I actually cut it out and used it as a reference for a high school chem class project.

I don't remember the exact details, but the gist of it was:

If you want to clean out your engine, drop some water in the intake (as was mentioned in this thread before).
If you want some added knock resistance/a tiny kick in your fuel, add your own finely measured chemicals (of which toluene was highly rated).

Other than that, they said using a lot of common additives COULD work for you, but also runs the risk of doing some serious damage because they're not proportioned correctly for your specific needs, engine, mixture, etc.

Spent an entire winter drenched in antifreeze trying to convince my GFs to not piss coolant from the union of the crack pipe and the thermostat housing. Also changed the clutch and the oil cooler seals and did the ford coil pack conversion. That thing hauled a ton of ass losing every fluid it had and misfiring like it was on its death bed. That engine is one of the best in my opinion.
