Funny, I was just asking myself the same question. My car has had minimum use for the last few years, and was a little rough in a few places induction-wise. But, before stripping down my carbs, I thought I would try some of this:

My car now starts smoother, idles better, and whereas it used to get a bit hesitant above 7000rpm, now runs over 8000rpm smooth and eager. A carb strip-down will still be needed at some point but the 200km I put on today ran better than ever... Provided you stick to general additives from mainstream manufacturers, you should be OK.

Since looking at this stuff, it seems a number of mainstream manufacturers use a comparable product for cleaning fuel systems as well. Neko.
