the people that have been on this board for the longest know why I drive what I drive. In my experience driving, GM's have gone above and beyond my expectations for what a car can and cannot do. To be honest, I've had two or three Cavaliers that I have mercilessly beat the everloving shit out of and they soldiered on like a boss. I like the way that GM products drive (although i fucking HATED my mothers' Pontiac G6... there was NOTHING i liked about that car), i like the way they look and i like the fact that they are easy to repair. In the past, I have looked at other manufacturers. Did you know I almost bought several imported cars? In late 99, I was all set to buy a leftover 99 Integra GS coupe. Later on that year, I looked at a Civic Si. In 02, i was going to buy an 03 Hyundai Tiburon GT V6. Just a couple of years ago, I was actually set to buy a VW Golf GTi but couldn't get what I wanted (or should I say 'needed') for the Cobalt SS I was driving.

what chaps my ass about imported cars isn't so much the cars themselves, but the pompous asshats out there that drive and import and think they're driving a fucking bentley when in fact they're driving an asian or german shitbox that probably has the same damn failure rate of any other fucking car. Those are the people I want to take a lead pipe to.

so there, that sums it up.

sam you and i are always on the same page about GM, my 01 sunfire was beat like i owed it money. it ran and ran, ran great even when i junked it. What did it in was a leaky waterpump that just wasnt worth fixing considering advanced age and mileage. Ive had 2 grand prixs' they both had the 3.8, ran great and ran and ran, my only non gm i have had is my truck a Mazda B series (ford ranger) i bought it for the same reasons i love GM, its basically the same truck it was in 1986 parts are cheap and its easy to fix

Cars, to me, are like women (or any person you would make a significant other). You may like the looks of one, but after you get past that, it's what's inside that counts.

I've owned several GM cars, and I treat them like royalty, and they still let me down. They've been terrible inside and out. Fords and Chryslers haven't been any better to me, though my Jeep so far has been great. I've had two VW's and they have been bulletproof. I'm currently driving a 2014 Nissan Versa rental (long story) and while uninspiring, seems like a quality car.

Of course, all that is only anecdotal evidence, but look at the repair records from JD Power or Consumer Reports, and they tell a similar story.

Maybe they just rust out before they can develop problems.

sam, GM has all but eliminated its corrosion issues of the 80s, up here in quebecistan where we dump insane amounts of salt on our roads and the defacto color of cars in winter is salt white GM's are some of the longest lasting cars, i have never sent a GM to car heaven because of corrosion, on the other hand my friends with Mazdas have had major structure issues due to corrosion quite early. Heck GM has even perfected its exhaust, never had to change the exhaust on any of my recent GM's, they went to the wreckers with factory exhaust

it's not so much the salt here... it's the tailings that they put on the road; it looks like sandblasting medium and blasts the paint right off the car.

you had old cavaliers, my sunbirds, remember that part of the front fender between the door and the wheel that on those cars rarely ever had paint left

I can't remember where I read it, but apparently, outside of the Northeast, I read that other places for worst corrosion on cars was something like Colorado and Hawaii...
