So, I'm looking for a small truck. Has to be 4x4 and has to be a manual. I'm most interested in an older toyota, but will consider anything fitting that description. What would you guys suggest?

Hey yeah you, fat ass. Not interested.

Ranger/Mazda B-series is a cheaper alternative because with a Toyota Tacoma variant, you're going to pay through the ass for it, just for the name.
S10 is too problematic with higher miles, the Nissan Frontier isn't a bad choice, either.

Toyota hands down. When it comes to the pickups you are paying for more than a name.

So, someone just put a 95 toyota up for sale like 3 houses down from me. It needs a new radiator and 02 sensors. He had to get 1700 out of it, but it has 260K miles on it. The frame looks really good. The rockers are pretty roached, and it has some fender rust, but overall it's not too bad. 4X4 works, and it seems to run pretty strong when it's not bogged down from the issue with the 02 sensors.

What do you guys think?

I drove the yota. It cuts out really really bad at anything but full throttle most of the time, and is pretty rusty. 260K miles is a loooot though.

The miles on the yota don't bother me. The fact it doesn't run well is troubling. The ranger doesn't look to bad but that's a $1200 truck in SC. I'd negotiate.

Is the Yota a 3.0L V6 or the 2.4L 4?

The yota could have a fuel system issue thats fried the cat, hence the having to run at full throttle. Could be an easy fix really.

260k is a lot of miles but if it runs well it will last for quite a while.

It's the 2.7 and the cel is for fuel trim, and both 02 sensors.

ok so its actually a tacoma and not a pickup then. Thats exactly what I owned, a 98. They are extremely durable trucks.

Great engine/drivetrain but the early tacos have severe frame rust issues in the rust belt. Check with toyota to see if they have replaced the frame on it.

If not you might score a new frame and other related repair work under recall. It could end up being a very good purchase if they take care of the issue.

I would say roll with the yota as long as the frame is in safe shape.

a guy I work with had a 90's Tacoma and they bought it back from him due to frame corrosion. He ended up buying an F150 instead.

The frame is actually really nice. But the guy HAS to have 1700 for it and I'm not paying that for a truck that runs for shit and has that many miles on it.

The simple fact is toyota trucks do, and pretty much always have gone for ever. Point in case - Hilux. You cant argue the quality of a toyota over a Gmc, or Ford truck of the same trim. Sure toyota had frame rot issues, but gmc truck body's have been rotting out in the same place above the rear wheels for its entire production history - does that not seem a little ridiculous to you?
