I'd recommend also finding a telegram group chat. There are several dedicated to the war.

Ive also got YT running non stop with live camera feeds of different places in Ukraine. I'm hearing air raid sirens as I type this.

dude ive been glued to the live updates since Thursday AM, fuck has shit gone sideways.

Currently at school where reddit is blocked and I have no service on my phone, I feel weird not being able to see updates.

I didn't mean to watch it, my feed is on autoplay but just saw the video of a father and son driving down a road and getting lit up by the Russians, their dog was also shot and the sounds are absolutely haunting.

Also saw a video of a couple probably in their late 70's or 80's lit the fuck up and dead inside their vehicle which is completely torn apart by heavy machine gun fire

be careful with the NSFW/gore videos its horrible.

I don’t even like gore in movies and I avoid this stuff like the plaque. I wish I didn’t let this kind of footage get to me so much, but I can’t help it. The things you describe would haunt me till the day I die if I watched that shit. Just the images in my own imagination are enough to keep me up at night.

I feel very similar. I think there are a lot of us who are emotionally effected by this needless war. The Ukraine was never a threat to Russia, so this is entirely a fabrication of Putin's warped mind. Now there are reports that Belarus plans to get involved. WTF - they don't have a dog in this fight. They are just more bullies deciding to pile on. Sanctions should be much more effective on a small country like theirs, so they should pay a heavy price to get involved. Horrible. Just horrible.

Putin is like a Dad to Belarus, or so I have heard. I don't think the force that they send will be very substantial, its almost like a very small reinforcement to the casualties that Russia has already sustained.

This has been going on for 8 years now. Although I think Samurai and I are the only people here that have been following it for that long.

Other than for petroleum exports, Russia is an incredibly insignificant place that's been run by one totalitarian regime after another for the last 400+ years.

Russia is about twice the size of the US (including Alaska) and yet has about half as many people as the US. Much of Russia is inhabited only by bears, trees and Baba Yaga.

That being said, Ukraine was the "jewel" of the Soviet Union and the Russian Empire prior to 1917. Ukraine remains a major agricultural producer where as much of Russia has trouble growing tumbleweeds.

This whole debacle started when Moscow-friendly Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych got booted out of office and replaced with Moscow-hostile president Oleksandr Turchynov with prime minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk basically running everything.

For most of Russian History, Crimea was part of Russia and their Black Sea Fleet has been based there. In the 1950s First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Nikita Khrushchev decided that Crimea should be part of Ukraine.

That was fine since Ukraine and Russia were basically the same country at the time and Nikita Khrushchev figured the Soviet Union would last forever. He didn't plan on Ukraine et al going rogue in 1991.

Fast-forward to 2014 and the political tide in Kiev turning against Moscow. It's not terribly shocking that they took Crimea back. A unexpected turn was seizing the coal producing region in Southeast Ukraine (Donbass and Luhansk), but it happened.

The folks in Kiev basically gave up on Crimea, but not on Donbass and Luhansk. The bulk of the hostilities up until a week ago, were mostly limited to that area.

So what about the other post-Soviet republics? Three of them (Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania) have up and joined NATO along with several other former Warsaw Pact Countries including Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

None of this has sat well in the Kremlin. The very prospect of Ukraine joining NATO would be a cataclysm from Putin's perspective.

So here we are today.

It's also worth mentioning that a month or so ago, what Putin mouthpiece Vladimir Zhrinovsky said on Russian TV when asked about the prospect of nuclear war:

"We will go to heaven as martyrs and the rest will just die."

I'm seriously worried for the future. That a man with nukes at his disposal has gone so far off his rocker does not bode well at all.

And my poor mom. After losing her firstborn son just before the pandemic hit she's half-demented with grief. Having lived through World War II as a child, now she's becoming fully-demented with anxiety. It's all so horrible.

What a nightmare playing out right before our eyes. I feel so much for the Ukrainian people right now!

The writing was on the wall: the West has placated Putin and enabled his brutal kleptocracy for way too long. Especially the UK, whose banks still launder a huge proportion of dirty Russian cash – despite having had a military-grade Russian nerve agent deployed on its soil in 2018 (killing an innocent civilian).

Putin's huge war chest and military spending were bankrolled for years by the insatiable European demand for cheap fuel, whilst Russia's reputation was whitewashed by its hosting of prestigious sporting events (2014 Sochi Olympics, 2018 World Cup).

Putin's strongman posturing was (is) enabled by Trump, his belligerent inclinations emboldened by Brexit and by the precipitous decline of the USA – not just as the global hegemon, but as a (now barely) functioning democracy.

So here we are. Welcome to 2022.

Yeah, I see so many people blaming Biden, but Trump worshipped Putin and openly asked Russia to carry out a cyberattack on Clinton, and then he met with Xi and reported back that Xi explained Korea belongs to China, and then he placated North Korea for nothing in return and revealed ultimately that he hates South Korea (my theory is because we peacefully deposed an authoritarian leader in 2017 and he was afraid of Americans doing the same).
