Well, doing a lot of electrical work myself, I know as a fact that running ANY type of wiring under ANY carped is against the NEC.

If you are fallowing all the other lines, then you'll be ok. Just dont let the wires loose in the attic. Run them through the beams with the other wires or drill new holes if there aren't any.

yeah, here's the first jack I put in. Hopefully it looks like it was done by someone with experience. I'll post pictures of the other's as soon as I can.

Sorry about that bad pic, I had to use the flash.

As you can see that one goes to the basement, lucky for me there was a hole in the wall wide enough to fit the wire. Apparently there used to be a faucet there before they put walls and a roof on the porch here.

Need a new router, it can't assign network addresses and when I got to repair it, it isn't able to update the IP address. I tried updating the firmware... that didn't work. I've hit the reset button a few times, swapped out the cable that connects it to the cable modem a few times. No luck. All the lights say it should work. I've restored all settings to normal without no further luck. So if you have any suggestions tips for fixing it, please let me know.

Otherwise I need suggestions/recommendations for a new router.

Linksys WRT54G is THE home router for expansion and extra features.

Otherwise any Linksys/Netgear product. Avoid D-Link.

You could alway run static ip addresses. Otherwise, I echo the previous post of this, either Netgear or Linksys produce good routers.

I tried running static IP's just a few moments ago with no luck. It has to be something to do with the IP's though, since I can connect to the DNS servers through my router... I don't know what though.

What exactly is wrong with d-link?

EDIT: only problem with that router is that it is only 10/100M when I'd rather have 10/100/1000

Yeah, what's wrong with Dlink? Many friends have Dlink routers, my dad has one and we use a Dlink wireless acess point (NOT a router) and matching Dlink cards and it's all working great.

Its a quirk when you get a dLink that is DOA. Ive used DLink many times in stuff and a few thing havent worked, routers and switches and a couple 10/100/1000 cards have been DOA but other than that its some good quality stuff.

Well, I just scored a D-Link DGL-4300 Router for half price so I am going to try it out. Hopefully it fixes the problem...

Weird because I did tech support for at the Quebec conference center (Palais des congrets) and we had something like 50 D-Link switches which we had to install to network the show rooms and the conference rooms and none were DOA. We also lent wireless PMCCIA network cards to the people attending who didnt have any and then again no problems. We had something like 12 D-Link wireless repeaters all over the place and those were flawless too.

You hear a load of Dlink horror stories because they don't seem to do the same amount of quality-testing as Linksys or Netgear, and they are usually not much cheaper.

I've had a 714+ fail completely, and another I don't remember the model of - but I've heard a fair share of RMAs and displeased people. I've only sold Netgear and Linksys products (more than 20 routers/access points in the past year) and never had such an issue - Why spend 2$ less to get a Cyrix when you can get a real processor instead?

Some units of the wrt54g has been known to overheat on occasion. Mine is one of those.

Problem solved. The new router works flawlessly. I'm fed up with Linksys dropping connections every few seconds and then the router just died... so far I haven't had a connection dropped yet.

What router did you end up going with?

I just ghetto-rigged a network in my house from my laptop to my Desktop PC via an old Cisco 8 port switch from the Clinton administration, and it works ok. I'm going to wire a network when I move in to my new house soon, and it will be more legitimate. This thing is really just a massive tangle of wires behind the chair I'm sitting in, so I'm thinking I'll wire mine under the carpet or through the attic in a couple of months. I haven't even seen the house yet so I'll wait and see.

Not the carpet pal. Bad idea. Attic, fine. Here's my recommendation. Go up to your attic and find where the phone line comes in. Follow it until it splits. Put a router there, then run lines out following all the other cables. And if some rooms don't have phone jacks, wire a phone jack and an internet jack so it looks like it was all done professional and shit.

All were doing is connecting my laptop and my computer. Its a distance of 20 feet from my Cable Modem to my computer, so its not like it has to look all pro and shit. I might go wireless so I can sit by my pool and read my email
