the 2 lift bridges in VSP have an interesting history, the rolling bridge was built AFTER through traffic stopped in the canal and only the west end of the canal was open, the peel basin was actually being filled in at the time. only in the 80s did dominion bridge stop using thier shipping facility in the lachine locks, they actually used to park barges in the newest of the locks (now regulatiing works) the other lift bridge in this pic sat unused for a few years, they had built a temporary beam bridge upstream from it, lasalle bound traffic crossed it and vsp traffic took the rolling bridge, the older of the spans remained unused at this time. any other pics to stump me?

The east gate at Pullman road of Turcot has been locked. I haven t been at the west end for at least a week so I dont know about there. So that means that ANY vehicles going along there are probably CN security or Transport Quebec people of some kind.

That will put a few thousand riders off as a terrific, and not too used, shortcut has now been closed off.

I thought so too but it has been quite a long time, since before last november at least though maybe some one does go there as a spot check sometimes or just to slack off, that anyone has "manned" the booths at either end. I try to walk Turcot end to end at least once a week and am around the east gate at least 3 times a week and, nope, no one been watching for quite some time.

I checked out both ends today. The east gate was open but only two cars went by as I headed west along the path on the falaise. Didnt notice them go back, yet when I got to the west gate it was locked.

So what is really going on is anyone's guess. Maybe there is simply "supposed" to be a locked gate at each end. Must have really p'ed off the guys who had to go back though, lol.

But what about Pullman as an emergency lane?

Seems to me it could be a possible route around the 20 for security/incendiary/police vehicles, no?

i agree but hey what do i know, they used to have a service road on the 20 between des trinitaires and the turcot interchange, gave direct access to the yards too from the 20 but they closed it years ago when they widened the 20, the curb is still visible near the fence along with some asphalt

What s the plan for the west end of Turcot anyway?

You know Garterm and those places.

In all the documentation I have on Turcot there isnt really any stuff regarding that part. Perhaps they sense it is a good thing to keep a yard functioning along there?

gartherm, garfield and garport always trucked what they were doing to the cp intermodal yard, i have seen thier trucks in the lachine industrial park around there. Garfield, gartherm and garport are not on CN land so the redeveloppement of the turcot yard has nothing to do with them, they are south of notre dame. An interesting flop is the "cite de lindustrie" the old canada car property, it has not had rail access for nearly 15 years

Are you sure about that? Seems to me the 20 was raised so they could continue to operate as part of Turcot. And who would own the land then?

at garfield and garport the 20 isnt raised and there are no tracks going to the property, the 20 was raised to allow the tracks to get to the mainline between the east and west sections. i ran the adresses in the city property database and it says "garfield transportation" as the owner, between the garfield property and the yards is notre dame, a snow dump, and the westbound 20

garfield/garport/gartherm has never been part of CN. they are a container leasing agent for overseas containerized traffic, most of thier work is liason with CP and the port of montreal. the property they have on the canal bank has been used for years as the montreal terminal for the business they operate.

on a similar branch there were companies on cns property ie: MAX24ltl, cotrell and Clarke but they were not owned in anyway by CN. for a while HBC logistics was doing rail shipments in containers CO painted for CN and the Bay. but like i said garfield garport is not on CN property, just built a new warehouse in 2005 they are not going anywhere

Ok, must be a weird cut up then as the rails slide over there but it does make sense as the only plan at Turcot has been to build a light industrial complex west of Angrignon.

That hasnt happened and there will not be a rush as there is still no "official" word on what will happen to Pullman.

The Superhospital wants Pullman almost desperately. They know they are not going to have such an easy (traffic) situation up there so they are trying everything they can to influence things at Turcot both on and above the ground.

They also discussed having a laundry facility under the Interchange. I don t know if that is still part of the potential plan.

Of course, Pierre Bourque wanted to put a waste treatment plant in there as well, LOL.

Ok, so let s ask why the 20 was raised at that point. I mean why would ground level be designed as though both sides of the highway were strictly a railroad property?

remember at the west end of the turcot yards there were 2 tracks going to canada car and 1 track to 32nd avenue in lachine that passed under there. also the reason the 20 is in the wrong direction there is because notre dame street was to remain 2 ways while being a service road for the westbound 20 while the eastbound 20 had its own (long gone) service road
