question about nausea

my wife is about 9 weeks and has been sick almost the entire day for the past month. my question is, do any of you know what can be taken to get rid of, or at least calm down her stomach? she has been taking this drug called Ondansetron that is for nausea and vomiting, but this is not working for her.

other than ginger ale does anyone know of anything she can take or try?

P.S. This is not just mornings, its all day. the only time she is not vomiting is when she is a sleep.

Thanks,

Brian

Diva where are you for this one! That has to be so awful for her. I was very lucky that I never vomited even once with either of my kids.

OH man. First off, tell your wife I am really sorry. I was so sick I lost over 30lbs with this baby.

If the ginger ale isn't working for her...of course try the old fallbacks, saltines, ginger ale, etc.

Should none of these work or she can't keep any food down - try these (they might sound bizarre, but they're better than being on drugs that trick your brain into not throwing up).

First off, make sure she stays away from certain smells that could escalate the nausea: shampoos, body odors, bathroom smells, pet odors, kitchen smells, ANYTHING that makes her sick. If she asks you to shower 4 times a day, DO IT!

She should try easily digested carbs like gingersnaps, graham crackers, rice, dry cereals and applesauce or pears.

Some really salty or high-fat foods have helped out women too, including me. Potato chips, cheetoes (i know it sounds like a joke, but works for some women).

What REALLY saved me were 100% fruit juice bars. Strawberry and Lime. They were great and gave me energy and kept me somewhat hydrated.

My doctor also told me to drink liquids SLOW and between meals. Don't drink liquids on an empty stomach. She'll feel really pukey if she does.

Other than that, If she loses more than 3-5 lbs in a week and just can't keep anything down - take her to the doctor and don't take no for an answer. It's not worth putting yourself in danger because some doctor says, "oh it's just morning sickness."

And help her out around the house, tell her to rest and if she needs anything to not be afraid to help. You'll get thru this. Mine lasted from 5 weeks until my 15th. It was a nightmare, but with the help of friends and family - i got thru it.

Keep us informed.

I don't know if she's taking pre-natal vitamins, but I was sick all day as well with my first daughter, and it was the pre-natal vitamins that were making me sick. I switched brands and it cured it. I still had the occasional puking in the morning, but the all day stuff stopped completely.

Not sure if that helps, but it's worth a shot.

Hope she gets over it soon.

she has been on a diet of mostly cereal, soup, fruit smoothies and on the rare ocassion normal food. Scents and smells are the biggest problem because she has a superhuman sense of smell.

The doctor has been really cool and given alot of the same advice. someone mentioned some kind of braclets that help with motion sickness. can anyone attest to the method?

She has not gained or lost any weight so far. The Dr. said diet and weight is not a make or break issue during the first 3 months, as long as proper vitamins are taken.

The only thing that has helped the most is Soda. The Dr. said drinking regular soda ( which we normally dont drink) helps because of the sugar and caffeine.

The whole diet thing has been stressing her and I out. The Dr. also said to avoid stress if possible because of heart problems on her moms side of the family. Her mom and grandma both died from aortic aneurysms ( a pending test should put everything in the clear for this aspect ).

Thanks to all for any words of wisdom.

Brian

She has been taking an Rx called Vitafol-OB+DHA for about 10 days. The sickness started the day after Thanksgiving. On our way back from an exploration of Pittsburgh. I initially thought it was car sickness, but was so wrong. At the last Dr. appt the nurse said that she was sick the entire time.

Oddly enough it seems that the only time she is not sick is when she is laying down or sleeping.

I hope this ends soon as well.

honestly, it will probably just take a few more days for her to get over this. at least she can keep some food down. i lost 22 lbs in less than 3 weeks because i could not keep anything down.

but either way, tell her to keep on truckin and she'll get better soon. i promise. she can always email me too for any other advice. tell her that divamonkey hopes she gets better soon for that baby. and i'm glad she's maintaining her wieght.

I know this sounds REALLY stupid, but cut up a few cucumber slices and put them in a glass of water. (And yes, she drinks it) It really helped this time around with my tummy. Also, cutting up a few lemon slices and smelling them calmed my stomach.

Good luck.

Does she eat as soon as she wakes up? If not, have her try to eat something high protein before she even moves...lay in bed and eat it. It sounds weird, but it really made a big difference for me (and my midwives said it helps most women a lot).

I hope she is feeling better!

As soon as she stands up in the morning, she vomits. the only way she can eat in the morning is to take her medicine, wait about 30 mins, then eat cereal or a fruit smoothy in bed. for some reason standing equals nausea and vomiting. We have tried high protein diets, liquid diets, and about everything else we here. Its so strange how there is no pattern to her nausea. some days she is good all day ( after the morning ) and some days its all day. We both have tried all recommendations from UER ( thanks to all of you ) and other stuff on the internet, but nothing works.

I would do anything to take her sickness from her and do it myself, but thats not how the game works. The Dr. said dont worry about the 1st 3 months, but Im a worrier.

Thank you for your kind words and concern.

Brian

I hope your wife gets over this soon. I've heard that sometimes it can just last the first trimester, but then again I've heard a lot of things about pregnancies. My wife was not sick with our first son, but with the second son, she was miserable.
Just keep the end result in sight, and tell her how much you appreciate everything she is going through for all three of you. It will be worth it.

Thanks,

Week twelve is Monday and it seems like its slowing down ( please god I hope ).
But then again I have thought that a few different times over the past 2 weeks.

Seems strange that something 3 inches long can cause so much havoc.
