question about RH blood

Found out today she is Rh- which is supposed to be bad. Im finding conflicting info about this online.

The only thing I have been able to figure out is most people/babies (90+%) are RH+ and if the mom is RH- and baby is RH+ this is bad and could cause problems.

any info or input would help put my mind at ease.

if your wife has the book "what to expect when you're expecting" - read it.

you'll find all the answers you need. and don't worry, the RH thing is no biggie.

Diva is right. You know early and it is not as big a threat as it used to be.

The only problem it can cause if you or the baby have a positive blood type and your wife is a negative blood type.

I, myself is O- while Atomx is AB+. The thing that the doctors would do is give your wife an injection of antibodies, like RhoGam around 28 weeks of pregnancy.

Here is a link to their website that answers a lot of questions.

http://www.rhogam....atients/index.aspx

My first daughter came out B-, so I didn't need a second shot of RhoGam, and my 2nd daughter came out A-, so it worked out nicely

Thanks for the info everyone. I finally got to talk/grill our DR. and I found out what the deal is. It looks like she has to get some shots around week 28 and then after U25680 Jr is born. Im still a bit clueless, but It seems that the afterwards shots are for any future kids. Im not to worried about this, since she has been vomiting since thanksgiving, and saying this is our only kid =(.. we will see.

How is everything going? I'm totally late to this post...I should check up here more! I refused the 28 week shot. Our son is A+ and I am O-.

It is a complicated issue. Ina May Gaskin is a well known midwife who has written on the topic, and just googling Rhogam and Rh- will bring up a ton of information. We spent weeks reading and calling anyone we knew in the medical field and talking to lots of people...I even contacted a woman who has written books on vaccines and she sent me a lot of helpful information. We ended up deciding that I should not get it, and our midwives were supportive. I recall that it is something like a 1-3% chance of the Rh difference becoming a problem in a normal, healthy pregnancy. The risks outweighed the benefits in my opinion. I did have to get a few extra blood tests, but I'd rather have something taken out then something put in.

Good luck!

So far all is good. the whole RH thing I was told by the dr. is no big deal. after the baby ( she ) is born, mom gets a shot and then its all done.

thanks!

She may be able to avoid the postnatal shot...they can type the cord blood from the baby right after the birth. I hear some hospitals like to give it regardless of the baby's Rh...though I am the type to avoid any and all medications unless absolutely necessary, so I'm picky about things like that.

The way it worked for me, (since I am a negative blood type, and my husband is positive) is I got a shot at 28 weeks pregnant, and if my baby is born with a positive blood type, I would receive another shot of RhoGam.

My blood type: O-
Husbands: AB+
1st Child: B-
2nd Child: A-

Since both of my daughters were negative blood types, I only had to get the shot once during each of the pregnancies.
