Wondering who out there is also ticked off at what has happened over the last devade or more for production electric cars, such as the EV-1.

Yeah, the Big Three sure handled the whole electric car thing wrong!! But some good things are coming down the pipeline...such as the Volt like Samurai mentioned. Electric drive and storage battery technology has skyrocketed in the last few years enabling a huge cost reduction in manufacture. And you know the Big Three, it's all about the bottom dollar!!!

EWWW. Electric cars. Liquid Hydrogen FTMFW.

FTMFW?

Hydrogen is too long a wait to become a reality, and produces too many emissions during production. And will take too long to create an infrastructure to support.

Electric cars can easily be charged with no connection to the grid, at your house. Or at your work, or at any place with 110v outlet.

the downside of electric cars is that you're still missing the boat on the back end when it comes to emissions and getting away from fossil fuels. It's the old song and dance of 'the power' gotta come from somewhere!'

and that's the problem. Couple that to lack of range between charges and the future of electric cars is merely as a stopgap until hydrogen-fueled cars become a realistic option.

Solar.
Wind.

or even Nuclear. (CANDU reactors)

And even the worst polluting Coal Power stations do not create any more pollutants than a car, than the station generating the electricity to charge the EV.

ok, i see your point.
but if you consider the average cars' emissions compared to even 10 years ago, it's pretty amazing.
I cannot remember where I read this, but the article had stated that most of the worlds emissions were not coming from North America or Europe anymore, but from China and India.
we can drive electric cars until we're blue in the face, but the rest of the world has to jump on the bandwagon too. Until that happens, it's fossil fuel or nothing!

I would believe that. The emission controls of North America is at a higher standard than China/India.

But then you can think about the cost of charging.

A typical EV will run you around $0.02 a mile. With fuel costs (at todays rates ) your car would have to be better than 70mpg. (aprox.)

Unfortunately the cost of production/small company EVs are a little high at the time. That's why you build your own.

plus.

that clip is a neat demonstration, but what wasn't stated is that the power to weight ratio was ridiculously in the electric cars' favor. That model Ferrari and that model Porsche are ridiculously over-powered, but also somewhat heavy. The electric car is a lightweight!

however, the quarter mile time was impressive despite the obvious advantage.

Nuclear. Seriously. A well monitored reactor poses almost no threat to the environment with the exception of a little hot water (to counter this global cooling predicament).

I always joked that GM had made hybrids for 50+ under their former EMD division

On a side note, Samarui, whats you take on the whole EV1?

The marketing was great. High end.

Except when they contacted the people that applied to get the car they started describing the short comings of the car.
