i was hoping that when GM brought the Astra over to sell at Saturn dealers, the AWD rally version would follow... alas, my hopes were again dashed.

You know what though, for the first time, GM actually caught my attention.

I was watching tv last night and saw the ad for the new malibu. I thought it was a fucking nice car. Numbers looked good too.

I never really cared for anything GM before cause I always thought the old cavaliers, sunfires, grand prix, etc were really ugly. They were ugly outside, and inside. They felt kinda cheap. I didn't find anything appealing about them. (sam, that's just my personal opinion...).

BUT the never GM models, woah holy shit. If I were shopping for a new car, I'd definedly check them out at the dealer, but i'd still probably end up with a Rabbit or Jetta...

curse of a fanboy?
tisk tisk.

What is the big attraction with VW, honestly? I'm dumping on you, Prof. This is just something that has been bugging me for a while now.

i've never seen the attraction and I've driven/worked on a bunch of them.

to me, they are:
boring.
bland.
uninspiring.
unreliable.
expensive to repair.

(air cooled are excluded from this argument... who doesn't love an old air-cooled V-dub?)

If I was going to have a European car, I'd start at Saab.

Well, sam, you see, to me, GM are (or were, depending which models):

boring.
bland.
uninspiring.
unreliable.

Only thing that does not fit in the same category is:
expensive to repair. Although none of my VWs were expensive to repair, so blah. In fact, on all of them so far, only basic maintenance was done (timing belt and breaks on my jetta, same picture with my golfs). I know some say they are a bitch to work on, and I can give that one to you, but I personally don’t give a shit, because I pay someone to do it.

I think VWs are very nice. I have always found the interiors to be very well designed, things are well placed. They have plenty of room (i'm 6`2). They are comfortable. I think the exteriors are dynamic, and the new Rabbit and GTI are really really nice.

Unreliable? I don’t know about that one. My boyfriend’s 2000 jetta TDI is at 388 000 KM and its still going strong. I had a teacher last year with a 1994 Jetta with 454 000 KM on it. He was still using it as a daily driver. One of my friends was able to put 350 000KM on his 1998 Golf 2.0L until he had an accident with it. My old 1995 1.8L Golf beater had 220 000KM when I sold it to one of my friends and he has had zero problems with it yet. The number of old beat up jetta and golfs on the road over here are insane. These cars just keep on going forever. There are a number of VWs with close to 300 000 km out there. I beat the hell out of my old golf.

And more importantly, they are extremely fun to drive. The handling is great. They just have this feeling, kinda hard to put down on words. They have a shit load of engines which are all fun. The newer 2.0T is a fucking blast to drive as is the 2.5. Fast, responsive, and economical (2.5).

When I drive my buddies Cavalier, I feel it’s like driving a washing machine. It has no guts, it has no feeling in it, it kinda feels cheap (when it rattles and all at 120km/h) and he had more problems with it than me with my VWs all put together.

And for Saab, all I have to say is eww. They are the ugliest higher end cars out there.

It's all a matter of taste... I think.

maybe it's the area.
it's hard to sell a used Volkswagen on this side of the lake.
most people stay right away from them, diesel or not.

with the exception of the last Cavalier I owned (which was cursed), my Cavaliers all went the same as your Vw's... but mine ran ;)

I know water cooled VWs can be HORROR SHOWS to own.. but my dad's '99 Beetle TDI hit 500,000 km on Sunday... total repairs have been a steering rack, a starter and 2 sets of ball joints. Exhaust system is still totally original even... car still feels nice and tight, no rattles or anything.

I don't even think the battery has been replaced. Also, it doesn't burn oil yet.

I think the trick is, just don't stop driving them. Ever. I know a lady who has a '99 Bug TDI, even the same colour as his, and it's been terrible to her.

And re: air cooled VWs... who doesn't love them?

Hey uhh... being the loudest kid on the short bus is nothing to be proud of.

Are you one of those guys that drives around a rusted out '86 Camaro with primer everywhere, dual boom tubes under the back bumper, and IROC wheels? Oh, can't forget the stick-on "airbrush look" wolf-howling at the moon sticker.

Go buy another whitesnake tape, and trim your mullet. I drive my car 65 miles one way to work every day, have been driving it that way for 2 1/2 years, race it on the track nearly every weekend I can, and I've yet to even put a wheel bearing or ball joint in the thing. And it still gets about 45 mpg.

My VW has never left me stranded, it starts all the time, and its been cheap and easy to fix! I love driving it, I can feel the road, it has good torque/HP ratio, my engine has a nice sound to it compared to other 4 bangers, and I always get positive comments! Another reason I'm into the VW scene is the community; unlike the Honda community where everyone is a fucking dickhead and they all compete with each other, the dub community all help each other out, from automotive problems to persona; ive met some great people through Vdubbing.

On another note heres a cavalier even I'd drive:

Yes, it isn't low enough if it isn't grading the road surface.

Very nice... he's got JDM Toyota Cavalier tailights. There were a couple of guys who had the right-hand drive conversion done to their Cavaliers.

Yes, for all of you weenie-knobs not in the 'know', the Cavalier was sold in Japan as a Toyota Cavalier.

As far as communities go, FWD GM and FWD Turbo Dodge have been really great. I ALWAYS look forward to a J-body or Delta meet.
