Ah, that explains why a lady got pissed off at me when I addressed her as "Ma'am" while I was at work. I wasn't trying to be smart or ignorant. Was trying to be polite.

Of course, I am almost twice her age.

And you're right about the 'female' bit. Too cold but then it works fine in a report.
