I just returned from a trip to New York. My neighbors across the street decided to move back up there and they asked me to come along to help drive the moving truck.

We burned $850 worth of diesel in 36 hours (24 foot truck with a 4-wheel car trailer with a Jeep Grand Cherokee on it). One thing I noticed is that the price of diesel is pretty consistent from Louisiana to New York. We paid right around $4.00 per gallon at every fill up. I think it was a little higher in Long Island but we only had to return the truck with 1/4 tank and our last fill-up was in Pennsylvania.

We did watch the price of regular unleaded climb from $3.50 per gallon to over $4.00 per gallon as we went north.

Even Detroit has had a recent gas hike.

3.76 a gallon lowest, 4.35 highest.


Let's not even talk about gas prices in Toronto >.<

Anyway I don't drive, so gas can cost $3/L for all I give a fuck. My bus pass still costs $79/month regardless.

If you think that gas prices will not make the price of your bus pass go up, then you are a fool.

While gas prices go up, more people use public transportation. More money from fare collection to pay for the increased price of fuel. Public transit is also funded by the government which receives the taxes you pay when you purchase fuel. You're basically paying for public transit at the pump. If anything public transit could become cheaper with the increased cost of fuel.

Due to the increase in fuel prices, Nashville's bus service just raised their fares, dropped late night service, and limited the routes of the buses with wheelchair lifts. This is with an increase in patronage, by the way.

With higher fuel prices, transit, along with everything else, will increase in price.

Posted by KublaKhan Here's my prediction, and you can all write this down: gasoline will NEVER EVER AGAIN go below $1.25 per liter. NEVER EVER AGAIN. Also, consumers can expect to pay upwards of $1.30 per liter during the summer. Perhaps even $1.50 per liter. Prices will stabilize around $1.35, and THAT will be the new normal. I passed a gas station yesterday that sold its shit $1.34 per liter. Up island, mind you, but still. Average price in Victoria and the lower island is $1.30.

I disagree. For two reasons.
Regardless of the obvious smarter choice, gas prices will not devoid people from buying gas.. they'll just spend more money to do it. It's such a big commodity, that regardless of all of our bitching and complaining, we are 'required' to keep it around.

The obvious flaws of transit systems outweight the fact people these days have no fucking patience. If driving a car to a location takes 10 minutes, as opposed to 30-40 minutes on a bus.. then they'll say "fuck it, I'll spend the extra $1.50 for gas"..

Secondly, regional public transit systems don't have the customer's needs in mind. If they can squeeze out more money from commuters, they'll eventually be making enough money to battle the rising fuel costs, AND making a nice profit.. because although not as much as gas, public transit is another thing people will pay for, regardless of the unwarranted price.

My position is that the price of oil will drop to well under $100/barrel, likely in the $75-85 range, which is about what it's fundamental value is right now, given current supply and demand. The price of oil (and several other commodities) has been driven up by speculative trading, much like tech stocks were in the late 90s. These bubbles ALWAYS break.

I will point out that there is MANY experts that said YAHOO was worth $200 billion, Nortel Networks should be trading at $150, Bre-X had plenty of gold in Indonesia, asbestos is a safe building material, PCBs pose no hazard to the environment or to humans and animals, and the list goes on and on.

You can read 20 points of view to every arguement.

All that matters, is that I'm right.
